Anybody here done it in a GA aircraft lately?

I have heard rumours about exorbitant fees (landing, security, etc), but can't verify them.

Also, I have a book, that mentions that when flying around Titusville Fl (TIX) you can call NASA tower and request a "Shuttle Tour" (if there is no activity, of course) and they will let you fly a low approach over the Shuttle landing facility. (This is from "The $100 hamburger" second edition, page 88). Has anybody tried this since 9/11?

Shuttle tour is closed. Check restricted areas. Most of the info in that book is 5 years out of date. (approx)

Instead of flying into IAD, use Mannasas, VA (KHEF); 5,700 ft rwy, ILS etc, 3 FBO's. I think It's just as close to DC and the Udvar museum annex as IAD and you will save a bunch of cash and Taxi time.

Used to go there in a Baron regularly. Call Piedmont Hawthorne, now Landmark I guess, at IAD and ask what the fees will be. There are quite a few single engine GA airplanes tied down on the ramp so the fees must be tolerable. The Manassas idea is a better option if you can rent a car.

I haven't been to the museum yet but I hear it's VERY cool.

The sucky thing is that the FBO's are at the north end of the field (right at the departure end of 19R&19L and the museum is on the south end of the field.

HEF could be a good option. Going into IAD at the wrong times of day will do nasty things to your hobbs meter.

My kid and I non-rev'ed into IAD and did the museum last spring. It's about a $15 ride each way in a taxi from the terminal to the museum and back. I'd guess about the same from the FBO's. Rental car about $30 so that was a push, but parking at the museum, as my aging memory serves, is $13 (?), making the taxi ride more economical.

Dunno about the GA fees at the FBO's. A couple of phone calls will take care of that question. Might be that the FBO will run you to/from in their van, offsetting at least part of the FBO fee. Possibly HEF and a rental car is the better option if price is more important than convenience.

The museum is really, really cool. Whatever route you choose, don't miss this place. One of the best places EVER for the pilot, the dork, or especially the dorky pilot.

The place is freakin' sweet. Make sure you have 4+ hours to spend, you'll use them all and more.
