Flyboys opens this Friday

"Flyboys"; a great movie about WWI fighter pilots opens this Friday in theaters. The Producer and the Director are both big aviation enthusiasts, (The Director, Tony Bill owns a Marchetti).

I saw the trailer and the first thing that popped into my head was Pearl Harbor. Barf.

As much as I love airplanes, I probably won't drop $10 at the box office to see a damsel wringing her hands, a black dude with something to prove, and some Mr. Hot-n-Happenin'-Hollywood guy who can't act his way out of a wet paper bag. AGAIN.

I don't care what Bob Hoover thinks about it, either. He's obviously not a movie critic.

Director Tony Bill’s “Flyboys” is an exaltation. World War I. 1917. America’s not yet in it. But many boys go overseas to volunteer for the Lafayette Escadrille, a band of Americans from diverse backgrounds with motley motives flying for the French against the Germans. “Flyboys” embraces the lives of seven – who they are, what fates await – all picked to pilot these new, flimsy, funny-looking flying machines. Each one alone in his open, single-seat crate, armed with only a pistol and a single mounted machine gun. It’s a magical adventure, swooping like rickety birds…each moment alive with death. There’s excitement aloft. Below, love’s a lift. The presence of the distinguished Jean Reno as their stabilizing French commander gives the film its spine and air of authenticity. The aerial combat is fabulous; I’ve never seen anything else even come close to it. The writing, photography, performances, direction – all top flight. “Flyboys” is so entertaining, so exhilarating, it left me walking on air.
