Long trips, low fares: Cross-country fares are hitting new lows, at least on one carrier. Independence Air unveiled a $44 each-way fare salethat's good to all of its destinations — including Las Vegas. That'sprobably bad news for the industry, which has blamed its billion dollarlosses partially on persistently low airfares. But, for now, it's goodnews for air travelers. Who would ever thought we'd see $108 round-tripfares between Washington Dulles and Las Vegas? (That's IndependenceAir's sale fare, including tax). From cities like New York, Chicago andAtlanta — the fare is about $168 round trip, including tax. No airlinehas yet matched the fare sale — perhaps because they can't afford to.Of course, there are restrictions. I-Air's fares must be booked byFriday, and travel must be completed by March 17. And since thecarrier's Las Vegas flights don't start until March 1, it's a shortbooking window if you want to take advantage of the sale fare. Posted at 8 a.m. ET

It's sounds more like a survival mode strategy and maybe a good one. Less of a loss than with those seats empty.

Econ 102, so I guess that means that every carrier except southwest and jet blue will soon meet their demise? Cause last time I checked, everyone was pricing below cost except the carries that are making a profit, which ain't too many

Econ 689, You do realize that the sale is only for about 10% of the seats on the plane for the first 2 weeks of the flights, and that the regular fare on the other 90% of the seats will make up the difference

MKT 673, You do realize this is a gimmick used by all airlines to attract attention to their tickets?

MKT 634, You do realize that when every airline opens up a new route, they generally price below cost to attract attention to the service.

ACC 634, You do realize that the average fare on a FULL flight with only 10% of the seats sold at a low fare should still be above operating cost.

do you think any auto manufacturer will ever cut wages and slash jobs so i can buy a hummer for like 10,000 bucks...that would be cool. Other industries call it a going out of business sale. I hope not though...I dont wish misfortune to anyone in this industry. But I know of no other that would lower wages and cut jobs to give away a product.

ALPA101, INDY WHO?

I too was cheering Indy for their guts to fight after giving UAL the finger. I do hope, if it's over, they go down like champs...not scratching and clawing and looking for 'floats'.

simmer down

INDYPILOT,

Yes I am familiar with Economics. Thank you for the refresher, though. I posted this because I am dismayed that YOUR managementseems to be steering your boat aground. I feel your frustration, like I said earlier, best of luck to all the FLY-I pilots and employees.
