No bonus?

The bonus $$ is going away (always a bad sign) .

Say what!?!... Are we talking rumor mill here or do you have inside Bupers info?

As for the original question... Just as the others said... apply and see how it goes. If you get in it's a wild ride! There may be an abundance of pilots right now but who knows. People are starting to leave the service again in droves. Good luck!

Every time they have an excess of pilots it is just before an increase in civilian pilot hiring and the the unexpected turnover catches they brain trust with the shortcoming. A year later they are begging for pilots. I saw the same thing in 1977, excess of pilots if you wanted to stay in, it will be in a non-flying slot. 18 months later, they are begging reserves to come back on active duty.

Yes, the ACP bonus is being cut. It's now back to the original 5 year bonus. The "20 year" bonus is no longer being offered. It's going to lead to the same situation (down the road) as before when you had O-5 Sq/CCs making less money than O-3 Flight CCs. Yes, I know it's always been a "bonus," but when it's been around this long and you cut it, it's a pay cut. Besides, one of my bros put it best when he said (paraphrase) "this bonus ain't for me, it's for my wife and kids and the **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** they put up with." Now you can sign for less cash and stay until the 14 year mark and then take a $15K/yr pay cut. There is a lot of bitterness in my USAF year group over this....we want the same deal the dude 6 mos in front of us got.

Spare me the noble service stuff. I love the AF and have "been there, done that," and still serve in the Guard. No, we don't do it for the money, but a pay cut is a pay cut, and when you have other options....

I was...got out 6 mos ago. I also know 3 current Weapons School IPs getting out and another 4 WIC graduates leaving in the next 6 mos. That's along with several other IP-types in my year group bailing out. Most of 'em heading for Guard/Reserve jobs. People are definitely moving towards the exits, and I'm not sure exactly why. Everyone seems to have different reasons, but most of it boils down to quality of life issues, and the cutting of the bonus doesn't improve the quality o' life.

Magnum,
Seen some good guys leave here in Lemoore and I've taken the same path..3 weeks to go. With the draw back and little fun left to be had; we've decided to head to the civil side give it our shake. Most of us were able to go reserves / guard; but I will miss the active ready room. For me, the bonus itself wasn't an issue, but I know how it figures into the total package and is a reflection of how the bean counters view the operators. Bottom line, everyone needs to take their careers into their own hands as best they can, and accept the risks for the decisions they make.

Concur...good luck to you. And you're right, the biggest thing I miss about the AD is being in a fighter squadron and being around the bros. I get that a little in the Guard, but it's just different. And to be clear, the bonus wasn't an issue with me either. I put my papers in before the bonus was cut and had the opportunity to sign the 20 year gig and passed.

This may sound funny, but alot of you will get it: The nicest thing about being in the Guard is logging onto my Guard email account and having only 3-4 messages after being gone 2 weeks, and none of 'em are important to me! It seemed my last year on AD, every time I got to work in the AM there were at least 10 friggin hand grenades from self-important pounder in my **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** Outlook inbox!
