My CFI expires in June and I'm thinking about attending AOPA's Flight Instructor Refresher clinic. Has anyone attended one lately? Would you recomend it or another course?

Thanks

Attended AOPA's course in 2004 in SEA. Didn't find it to better or worse than other's I have attended in the past years. Got more from the interaction with the other attendees than from the course itself. Quite a good mix of active CFI's, airline types, corporate types, the occasional instructor type (my self included). For the money (got the AOPA member discount) it was good enough to fill the renewal requirement.

If you want to skip the hassel of doing any kind of refresher stuff, get to the CLE FSDO and simply ask them to renew it. They have NO problem doing so.

Call them in advance and ask when one of their CFI renewal folks will be there. Typically the renewal folks are there 4-5 days a week.

CLE FSDO phone number is: 440.686.2001

The cab ride from the airport is about $30.00 for the round trip. I've been renewing mine this way for 6 years.

And no, you don't have to have given any lessons, be a Checkairman, 121 Captain or anything else. Just bring your tickets, medical and yourself with you. It takes about 20 minutes for them to renew it.

Did the Gleim Online Refresher Course. It was a good CFI refresher. Easy to use. It was only a hundred bucks. Some FSDOs will not renew airline Captains anymore unless you work in the training department. Call your local FSDO.

CFI Renewal

American Flyers is $125 for life!!!! $40 extra for paper work if you want them to do it. Otherwise $125.

Lifetime deal sounds great but you need to be online for 16 hours and the course is really boring. The gleim course you do not and the content of the course is good.

I did the American Flyers renewal last year because I liked the Idea of the $125 for life deal, but it was BORING! I probably could have finished the thing in a 1/4 of the time required but it forces you to complete the "Required minimum study time" before letting you take the exams.

The Gleims are the best, cheap and painless.

I did the American Flyers thing also, the thought of one price for life lured me in. I thought it was a pretty good course, but the 16 hour thing is tough. I thought I'd be slick and just leave the module open and running while I watched the tv, but no go! If you don't flip a page every so often it stops the clock!! Bummer.

Still, it won't cost me again,,,,,

Is there an expected amount of time to complete the American Flyers Renewal????Or ca I just come every evening from work and 2 or 3 hours per day until I'm Complete????? Someone Explain Further???
