I was wondering if when you are walking though an airport if it was impolite not to say "hello" or node to other flight crew members (your airline or others)?

Isn't this just common courtesy? This has nothing to do with being a crew member or not. If someone makes eye contact, smiles and says "hi" and you do not respond that is what is called being rude. Like not saying "thank you" to someone who holds a door for you. Have we really sunk this low as a species that this question even needs to be asked?

I don't see how or why it would be impolite.

I like to approach other pilots in the airport and stick my hand out to shake their hand, then when they go for it I quick pull my hand back and run it though my hair and yell PHYC!!.

ahhaahahahah

they love it

It's the same as when the motorcyclists pass one another on a road. They always wave even though they don't know each other. It's the polite accepted standard. That said if I don't get a nod I don't lose sleep over it (or even think about it for longer than two seconds). In fact I'm not even thinking about it anymore.

Learning socially acceptable standards of behavior from FI. That's a good one.

what the hell is "Phyc"??

Delta Pilots despise Connection pilots of any type, although they particularly loath Comair pilots. ASA pilots like Comair pilots, but despise Freedom and Shuttle guys.

Everyone in Atlanta seems to like AirTran pilots, although they are the "competition." Just goes to show you how well Delta runs its operations. All the employees under the Delta umbrella hate eachother to the point of physical violence if they thought they could get away with it, while they love the airline that is putting them out of business.

Seems Delta pilots would like the guys who are bringing them passengers to fill their Boeings, but that is not the way it is.

This business is nuts - you will need a really thick skin.

Ah yes. The gotta wave at another biker rule. Plus, you had better know the correct way to wave. A simple wave won't do. You must point to the ground with one or two fingers with an air of smug indifference. Anything else would be uncool. What a royal pain in the ass. I'll respond if they wave first but unless I know them I'm not starting the process. I don't wave at every pick-up truck I see either. Who started that crap?

While we're on the subject, why does every fat balding middleaged professional having a midlife crisis have to buy a $25K H-D and then wear "The Uniform" every time they go riding. Engineer boots with a Harley emblem in the sole, a do rag, a black leather vest that's too small to fit around their gut so they attach one of those little chains to bridge the gap, numerous pins and patches on said vest (POW, H.O.G., Vietnam Service Ribbon, 1% er, etc) a wallet with a chain, fingerless gloves and the obligatory goatee that's more gray than any other color. On Any Sunday (pun intended) there are about 10,000 guys around here that fit that description and they are all riding the same bike (Fatboy or Road King). Amazing. What ever happend to jeans, an innocuous pair of work boots and a T-shirt?

Rant over......

I grew up on bikes, from 5 years old on, street and dirt. There was a time I think that the wave truly was comradarie between bretheren, those who rode and had a deep love of bikes, for whom it was a part of their being.

Sadly, these days so many "motorcyclists" fit your very apt description out there on the road. And people wonder why motorcylce fatalities are up, duh. Most of these numbnuts have no bike handling skills whatsoever.

These days I stick to the local motocross tracks on open practice days and do my street riding in the hills during the week when all the numbnuts you describe are at work.

Its like the Seinfeld episode where Jerry stops hugging hello. Pretty soon everyone is angry at him.

Just nod or wave or pretend you're on your cell phone and ignore.

Depending on the day, I really like the bike wave thing. It's always interesting to see who will acknowledge you. As a sportbike guy, most everyone burning rice will give you the wave or nod. You certainly don't expect much out of the Harley guys though. Too cool for that kind of dog versus cat kind of thing. Where it gets interesting are those cold, rainy, generally crappy days. On days like that almost EVERYONE on a bike will give you the signal... I think that we all know that you really have to love to ride and can't possibly be one of the afforementioned "poser" types who only look for the sunny sundays. And yes, I also ride big Jap cruisers and Harleys as well.

yes, its generally considered polite to acknowledge other crew members in the terminal. you dont have to wave at them when they are half way across the terminal tho... the question is, at what distance would the wave/nod be considered as excessive.

What would YOU want a flight crew member to do, regardless of their position? How about this:

"Treat others as you would want to be treated."

or this,

"Esteem others higher than your self."

My experience has been that the greatest leaders, managers, CEOs, etc..... or even friends, are the ones who are confident in what they do, but often, are the most humble.:)

Don't let the uniform or insignia keep you from smiling at them and giving them a friendly nod.

If someone makes eye contact with me, or visa versa, I think both should smile and nod or simply say 'hello.' If no eye contact is made, then there is nothing to worry about.

Saying hello is just being polite. That is the problem with people -they think they are better than others. Not the case- you just are telling them you are a complete ass.

Here's another one... Please don't call the ATC-reported traffic a "little Cessna." Soon, it will be a "little Saab" and then I'd be a racecar in the red and have to bust a cap.

Seems to me that FO's wave to FO's and Captain's to Captain's. As an FO, I'm pretty much ingnored by Captain's, even when open conversation is occuring between my Captain and another Captain, the other crew usually makes it seem as though I am invisible and not worthy of any sort of greeting/conversation. Therefore, I stopped trying. Not worth my time to say hi to captains but FO's fine. Quiting soon to take a job that pays more than regional captain's anyway, flying better equipment in the corporate arena. Regional's suck no matter what, there are a lot of good people out there but lately it seems that the tool bags are outweighing the good. Being an airline pilot doesn't automatically make you cool! Rude captain's, make sure to check your oversized head as a carry-on since it shouldn't be allowed in the cockpit.

Wow what a broad statement. I'm just curious is there any bad thing in your life that you don't blame on the Delta pilots? I will agree that common courtesy has gone out the window in society in general but at the airport to be specific.

i saw these two guys the other day they did that top gun high five thing, then they did a chest bump and then they had gay sex right there in the gate area. i thought it was kind of strange but then i saw riddle stickers on their flight cases and i guess that is the accepted way alumni greet each other.
