Say what? I am going to assume that you do not actually mean in the galley cart compartment itself (not quite sure how that would work and why you'd want to do that) but in the baggage locker just forward of the galley area. Since this compartment was designed as a baggage compartment I don't see how it could be "illegal" to put your bags there, technically or otherwise. I know that is where I've always put mine.

The EMB-145 has had the same problem with the crew bag storage issue. The forward closet contains an O2 bottle, PBE, and a halon fire extinguisher, and the FAA says if crew bags are placed in the closet it blocks the equipment. They have even gone so far as to say that if the equipment is blocked by crew bags, then the crew could be violated. Our company began a mod program to move the equipment to a different closet, and in the meantime they have pleaded with the FAA to allow us to put our crew bags in there. Now we can...even if it blocks the equipment. In the EMB-135, I've put my bag in the galley cart before. You've just got to make sure you get it out before the caterers arrive. Bags also fit behind the last row of seats on the 135 since there is not an additional FA jumpseat like the 145.

Some RJs dont have that little cubby hole to put your bags. You have drag the carts out and there is space behind them for the crew bags. Who cares if it is legal or not? Where else are you going to put them? At my company you are required to keep your bags on the plane ( at least we were 6 months ago, but I dont always read every stupid memo our chief pilot puts out) so they have to go somewhere!

.

Stowing bags behind the galley carts is not an approved place to stow bags. I've actually had a Fed inspector look behind the carts to see if the crew was using this space. I'm not saying that it isn't common practice but isn't legal. My best advise is to get a bag that fits in the overhead bins. Most "crew" style bags will fit as long as you dont stuff them to the max.

I would venture to say its "illegal" b/c when W&B is done, that location for crew bags is not figured in the BOW.

I know that in the CRJ-200 a purdy neat stuff bag...not overstuffed fits in the overhead storage bin. I was slightly amazed.
