A lot depends on what kind of flying you do. As the poster above mentioned, flying a lot of day trips with no overnights, it might be good to have a ballistc nylon type bag with wheels and a compartment for a laptop and an emergency overnight change of clothes.
I'm sure all the "noodle armed sissy" posters think nothing of their 22 inch roll ons that they use to piggy back their flight bags on. Sounds perfect for domestic and regional flying.
International is a different story. Many EU and Indian airports allow only ONE carry on. It doesn't matter if you are flight crew or in uniform. When you have to check that roll on and then proceed on a 35-40 minute walk to the gate at LHA or CDG, my noodle arm is relieved to have that handle and wheels on the flight bag, which fits fine in the MD-11 cockpit.
So choose your poison. I know guys that travel with a large (fat) nylon bag on wheels that carries a lot, including a smaller, laptop-size bag that they use next to them in the cockpit while the larger bag is in the closet. Just find something that meets your needs for the type of flying you do (and ignore the comments from the insecure macho types that feel like having wheels on your flight bag is for sissies.)

I am a day tripper and I use the 50.00 roller flight case from Office Depot. I don't take an overnight bag or anything. I just go to the airport and pick up my flight bag from the crew room and off I go to the airplane.

Hey thanks there liver lips, you International traveling guru. Hmm... let's see, he asked this question in the REGIONALS forum, moron! Go back to your Emirates flying, watch out for the camel spit.

OOh,, Aren't we clever Uncle! Most of the guys sitting acoss the WB cockpit from me are all ex-regional dudes. If you are myopic enough to think that flying the regionals is all you'll ever amount to, then I'm sure that will happen. If you reread my post, you'll find that I was only trying to say find the bag that works for you. When I read all your posts on this site, you apparently think you are the "Don Rickles" insult expert of the site, filled with negative comments about everything anyone posts on the site. Take your smart ass comments and stick 'em where the sun don't shine. I'm sure you are a real pleasure in the cockpit with that attitude. And hey! Don't bother applying at UPS, they have the Minnesota Psych test, and I'm sure that you won't pass.
Have a great commuter day!

^^ eh.

The books fit nice and easy in a scott's leather case. Depending on whom you work for, manuals may or may not fit well in the office depot special.

The jep binders also fit well in a scott. That makes my day easier when pulling 3 plane swaps a day

1. There's life after the Regionals???
2. "Commuter" is so 80's.
3. Blue ink on message boards is so late-90's.
