If you get the fake leather $30 flight case from Office Depot, the handle will break within 6 months. OfficeMax has a US Luggage bag made out of material similar to your rollerbag. It is around $40 and will last longer. It fits in the CRJ bin, but is not very tall. You will not be able to fit your plates, books and a DC headset in there.

I say cough up the cash and get the Scott Leather bag. You'll be glad you did; at least after the credit card is paid off. They look great, have tons of room inside, and are built like a tank. Full grain, saddle grade 1-piece leather. I get a lot of compliments on mine from the cheap a$$ pilots that buy the $30 wonders from Office Depot.

Mine has a thin pouch attached to the inside lid that holds my headset and sunglasses. I can fit two 3" and a 1" Jepp binder, 2 3" FOM/POM's, and my laptop in it all at the same time. It's a tight fit and heavy, but it beats dragging around an extra laptop case through security. I don't fly the CRJ, but I have seen CRJ pilots with these so I'm guessing it will fit in the bin.

What ever you decide to get, if it's actual leather, keep it looking nice by putting some shoe polish on it (where you don't have stickers) once in a while. Especially on the edges and bottom where it rubs every time you set it down and any place it gets scratched. Supposedly you can get 20+ years out of these Scott Leather bags doing that. You'll look like a new hire the whole time but who cares?

This thread has just made me aware of another benefit of being a cargo pilot. You don't have to worry about how your flight bag looks or where you will put your sunglasses :)

I used the staples special with wheels as a floater pilot for over a year. I have trudged it through every type of weather imaginable to and from my baron on the ramp. Since we travel the airlines alot to get to new assignments, we check our rollerbags, and drag our flight cases on the plane with us. Therefore the wheels make it nice. Not to mention we carry just about the entire US of NOS plates. Considering we are travelling half asleep and in our jeans and sweatshirts, how we look doesn't matter to us. I always planeside checked my flight case on the RJs since it would not fit in the overheads. Besides a few scrapes, it did the job.

I just ordered one, and I'm not ALPA yet. I ordered to 8" for $310 w/shipping. Does that sound about right?

Yes, Scotts fit the CRJ.

Polish your flight bag??!!!!!!! BAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHHAHAHAH

I think the best part of the Scott bags is when they start getting a little worn and broken in--- It gives them a lot of charecter.

Can you buy the Samsonite bags at any local stores?(ie Office Max or Staples) I've had an Office Max $30 special for over 9 years and it has held up surprisingly well. It's time for a new one though....

Amen on scott leather bags. I went through numerous cheapers bags through the years. If this is going to be a long-time career (who knows these days) I'd recommend the scott leather bag. I truly believe it can last an entire flying career. They give an ALPA discount as well.

Call up Scott and tell them you want a "Jumbo Black 8 Inch." They will deliver it right to you...
