Out of curiosity, where do you guys find to live while on first year pay at a regional? Faced with this dilema soon, I am curious how many guys live with their parents or rely on second incomes to live. Being single, a second income isnt an option. And paying rent or a mortgage alone would be impossible.
roomates... crashpads... but, living with your parents, is... well, you figure that one out. (unless, of course, your 18, then what the he!l) Most airline crew rooms will have loads of "available room" ads posted somewhere.
I would hae to agree. It seems that living with other people is the way to go in this case. I've seen many live in crashpads 4p in a 2br apt. knocks down the rent to $200 each for everythihng (or a bit less in some cases depending on where it is.). don't bring very much. a notebook computer for when youre there. a PS2 or X-box. an airmatress. and whatever you need for work and hanging out while youre there. if you Commute to work from home, live in youre parents basement while at home. save that money. If not, well...it's hard to beat living in base. Give it a shot if youre single.
A guy in my base bought a house for about 60k that's small but in great shape and in a reasonably good neighborhood. It even has enough yard to BBQ and play beer-frisbee in. He rents it out to 6 people at $200 each. That more than pays for his mortgage and bills, and builds the guy equity.
Most guys find a flight attendant to stay with once training is over. I'd say at my company 95% are hot and pleasant just like the Virgin Atlantic stews depicted on Richard Bransons new show. And with many of them making more than a first year FO without the astronomical college debt load, where can you go wrong?
If the area has reasonably priced apartments and your debt load isn't too bad, renting a 1br apartment shouldn't be impossible. At my first company, I made rent payments on my own with no problem. If you are based in (or commute from) an expensive place to live, the roommate option is almost always available. When all else fails, it's generally possible (and extremely lucrative) to tolerate mom and dad for one more year...generally.

I was livin in this Barrel O' fun truck for awhile, but you know what happened to that. Seriously, buy a trailer, it sucks but it's cheap as he1l. Just don't bring home any chicas you want to impress.
I successfully assumed 30k in credit card debt on two first year pay scales.. COEX for 9 months, furloughed 1year, ASA 1st year pay.. I rented an apartment I could not afford.. DONT DO IT>>
If you like where your parents live, like I do, then live with them. Who cares. I currently am living with my parents, even though I spend about 6 nights a month in my own bed. Usually I'm at the crashpad, flying, or going to some other city to party with friends. Last night was the first night this month I've slept in my own bed at my parents house. It may sound like it sucks, but I'm enjoying it at the moment. If you're single, why not live it up for a while and live out of your TravelPro.
There's been two nights in the past two months that I was in a city without a place to stay... and ended up using that as a reason to go back to her place.
