Another thing that I think is good, is that you are sticking with something that you trained on in the service.
I like Glocks but I'm not sure about it being a good first gun since the only external safety is on the trigger. I started out with a Colt .45 compact and it is a great little gun with a big punch. If price is an issue, Ruger makes some pretty good autos. A Makarov is also an excellent, reliable gun and usually under $200.
How about a M249 SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon) .223 Cal 200 round box magazine, great for plinking, target shooting, spray and pray and all other manners of extermination- YEAH BABY!
Something we both can agree on. And yes the Ruger autos are reliable and priced well below most of the expensive Teutonic super guns. A freind of mine has a Makarov. I haven't shot it. If the gun is reliable...200 bucks is a value.
friend of mine has a makarov, he's pretty happy with it, it's a simple no non-sense handgun (of course, gotta hand it to those commies for designing good/reliable firearms)
parts/accesories can be occasionally hard to come by, but 9mm ball ammo is pretty cheap i believe.
my suggestion is to buy a used glock 19 (9mm). assuming you can find one. buy an aftermaket barrel and you are set. no one has mentioned magazine capacity. a glock 19 will hold 15 in the mag and one in the pipe. the guns sold today hold far less. 10 i think, please correct if wrong. i have had this gun for a while and it is by far one of the best guns ever made. the model 19 is glocks compact 9mm version. real easy to conceal. my $0.02
Skip the pistol - nothing like the sound of a 12 gauge cycling (is that 00 Buckshot I hear.....) Remington 11-87 Super Magnum with the magazine extension to hold 10 rounds.

The guns sold today HOLD the same size magazines that were sold before the COMMUNIST CLINTON ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN of 1994. The magazine's capacity however, must be limited to 10 shots. The magazines that come with new guns made since the 1994 AW Ban have been limited by federal law to 10 shots. Not the guns. It is not "illegal" to possess "pre-ban" magazines in your "post-ban" gun.
There are two ways to get a HI CAPACITY magazine...one way is to buy a "PRE BAN" one on the internet, from a gun show or private individual. I just bought a NEW IN THE WRAPPER, made before the ban, HK magazine for my USP for 100.00 bucks. The other way is be a Law Enforcement Officer and get an "LEO" high capacity magazine. They are marked "FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT ONLY" and are priced about the same as regular magazines. If you are found in possession of an LEO marked magazine and aren't an LEO, you'll be jeopardy of going to federal prison and paying large fine.
But to sum it up...the handgun has not been changed in design, just the Assault Weapon ban has limited magazine size to 10 shots.
That bill will sunset in 2004, because the Republicans have said they have no plans to allow that bill to become permanant law. But watch your Democrats...they are foaming at the mouth about this and are planing to provide "new" legislation to attack gun owners.
