If you are getting typed or have a type rating in a part 91 aircraft over 12,500 is a first class medical required to act as pilot in command. Somewere I have heard/read that a first class medical is required to operate aircraft over 12,500 with a type as PIC.
The way I understand is that if the operation requires an ATP/TYPE you have to have a 1st class. If it does not require an ATP but requires a type rating you do not need a first class medical.

What FAR covers this....

thx.

Depends on what type of operation you are conducting. You can get typed with a Private. The medical is dependent on the pilot certificate not the aircraft. For a corporate operation only a commercial certificate is required by the FAR's. But most corporate operators require an ATP. And the type ride is the same as an ATP ride. Most air carrier operations require an ATP.

IF the flight being conducted requires an ATP by operating rule, then a valid first class medical is required. For example... PIC on a turbojet operated under 135.

Correct. The weight of the aircraft has nothing to do with the level of medical certification required. The only factor is the type of pilot certificate required for a given operation.

Only an ATP demands a first class medical certificate, and a first class is only required when exercising the privileges of the ATP.

See 14 61.23(a)(1).

Part 135 PIC

1st class is not required for Part 135 TJ PIC, it is only requried if carrying passengers, our DA-20 Captains fly with a second class, or the second six of a 1st. You may require a first class, if you are getting your ATP and a type at the same time.
