First "Bay", then "Sierra" now "Norcal"

Is it just me or have I had to update every airport Jepp in the Bay area twice in the past few months because some govt. nimrod can't make up his mind about what to call approach control ?

I just can't bring myself to call them "Sierra" or even "NorCal". I will either call them "Bay", or just "Approach".

Why on earth would someone change a one syllable name to a 3 syllable name?

Anyone actually called them "Sierra?"

There's "Socal" and "NorCal" Approaches, "Cencal" is a flight bag manufacturer, so Fresno is staying "Fresno" Approach.

Sierra Approach

As we were decending into SFO for the FMS Bridge 28R I called approach with the usual "bay approach" call-up. They responded with a very hardy "SIERRA approach" in their acknowledgement... I wasn't going to start calling them Sierra Approach when they've been Bay Approach all my life growing up. I did the same thing a few days later when we departed to go back to the east coast. What were they thinking? Who are these people that come up with this stuff? For you guys in the southeast- Macon Approach now insist that they are Atlanta Approach control. Just because they are in the same tracon facility dosen't mean I am going to stop using "Macon Approach" whenever we are in their airspace! For you guys that fly into ORD regularly, do you call it "O'Hare approach" or "Chicago Approach"? My Dad insist on calling them "O'Hare approach" on the radio.

Ok, how about anyone in the northeast hear one of the controllers call DCA by its new name, "Regan"? And was he hired before 1981?

What is up with this? Just because they moved the facility why do they have to rename it?

Most of early flying has been in the Bay Area. It has been a while since I have flown in the area and I have been surprised by some of the changes. 1. "Sierra" does not roll off the tongue like "Bay" 2. Was on a flight out of the LA area into KOAK and was fully expecting the Panoche Two arrival and we were instead given the Marvn One which is more of a dogleg into the finals for KOAK then the pretty much straight in you have on the Panoche Two. I was in a heavy for that flight so I don't know if that was a factor, but for years have always been given the Panoche Two. 3. Stockton Approach was gone, used the same frequency though (123.85) I guess they integrated that into "Sierra" Has Sacramento Approach been integrated into "Sierra" as well?

Since being from the airspace structure for just a short bit it suprises me just how many changes can occur in a short absence.

Sacramento was the first to go several months ago. I think Stockton just recently went away as the first time I heard them using Sierra was early last week. It's my understanding that Monterey will also be "assimilated".
