Fire Shuts Down Hartsfield-Jackson Concourse

POSTED: 7:56 am EST November 9, 2007
UPDATED: 10:32 am EST November 9, 2007

ATLANTA -- Operations returned to normal Friday morning at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport more than three hours after an electrical fire in a closet caused a power outage and led to flight delays and cancellations.
Power was restored by 10 a.m. and Concourse C was reopened, airport spokesman Herschel Grangent said.
A fire broke out in an electrical closet near a gate on the councourse, according to an airport spokesperson.
No one was injured in the fire, but power was out to the entire concourse. Power was returned just after 10 a.m.
AirTran Airways operates 22 gates on Concourse C, where the fire was reported in a closet about 6:30 a.m.
Airline spokesman Tad Hutcheson says that's two-thirds of AirTran's operation at Hartsfield. The airline has canceled 38 flights, both incoming and outgoing.
Hutcheson says flights at the carrier's 11 gates on Concourse D are operating as normal. And crews are working to manually deplane passengers on incoming flights because of the outage.
Delta Air Lines spokeswoman Betsy Talton says about 120 flights -- both incoming and outgoing -- have experienced delays. She says those flights are mainly operated by ASA, a regional connection carrier for Delta.
She says crews are working manually to process passengers manufally and get them out as quickly as possible. As she puts it, "That means getting people checked in and on board and seated, and other things that have to happen to dispatch flights."
Sheila Faber arrived for her 10:30 a.m. AirTran flight to Wichita to find it had been canceled.
The Marietta resident said she was traveling with her two elderly parents to attend the 100th anniversary celebration of the family's synagogue in Wichita.
"I'm traveling with parents in wheelchairs. It's challenging, what I'm going to do with them for the next several hours," she said as she stood in line to book new flights.
Leslie George and his friend Missy Durham had their 10:15 a.m. AirTran flight to New York City canceled. The two were headed up north for a weekend away from Atlanta.
George said he wished the airline had done a better job notifying passengers of the cancellation.
"No e-mails or phone calls," he said.
Georgia Power Co. spokeswoman Carol Boatright said a crew was on the scene to help the airport identify what the problem is. She said the problem was in the airport's equipment.
"The problem is on their side in their electrical system," Boatright said.

It was probably some ASA ramper (excuse me, DELTA ramper) smokin' a dubbie in the closet that started the fire.
