The final report of Crossair flight CRX 3597 - crashed on NPA Rwy 28 in Zurich on 24.11.2001 (Avro RJ 100) has just been released.

A very interesting document in regard to culture and training evironment of former Crossair. The details given in the report - particularly the commander - are shocking to myself...

Interesting report

A couple of things caught my interest:

The Captain once pulled the gear up on a Saab on the ground, for no other reason than to demonstrate that it couldn't happen ... he was wrong. The airplane was totaled, but he didn't lose his job.

At the time of the accident the copilot had less than 500 hours total time. He was hired with 142 hours. He wouldn't even qualify for a Commercial pilot certificate in the US.
 
The captain was with the company since foundation. From a small one aircraft charter company into a large european regional airline. During this mutation, many things happend. He was well known to the company management and therefore a kind of under his "protective wings" meaning i can't kick you because you're a sort of buddy of mine...

Copilots with such low time are quite common in Europe. Many large airlines practice this since ever and it works out, IF the company invests money and trains their pilots according to a special program. However, he was not associated with being sponsored or trained by a major company. He did a self sponsored route with a particular flight school who submitted many pilots to CRX. So for him it was impossible to gain advantage of special courses such as advanced jet training oriented at airline procedures and thought by senior captains.

I personally see more and more pilots being certified with substantial lack of instrument flight knowlegde. Not even meaning basic attitude flying - more the correct interpretation of nav instruments, procedures and situation awareness.
