Let's start this over...and please, no thread hijacking!

Does the captain of an airliner have the authority to prohibit the carriage of firearms in the cockpit, regardless of any other crewmember's status as an FFDO?

Super 80's answer is "no." Is there a reference for that somewhere?

Any and ALL discussions of a specific operational nature should not be discussed here... on an anonymous and public forum. To sit and debate the program.... thats one thing, but your question moves this discussion into realms that can compromise the integrity of the program, and thats really the last thing it needs.

I've applied for the program, but haven't gotten a training date yet. I guess I'll find out for sure then.

But if answering a question like this on Flightinfo is a threat to the integrity of the system, then maybe the system is in trouble to begin with!

Apply common sense here, if a crewmember has a gun and the captain does not, what the hell is he going to do about it, short of making a very polite request.

You won't get any reference because it is SSI. You'll need to contact your company or union security person who would have access to SSI and get you the answer.

FFDOs are authorized to carry weapons as part of performing their duties as airline pilots. If a pilot has reservations about having a firearm on the flight deck, the problem is with them, not with the FFDO- at least that's my airline's policy.

We haven't had a situation arise yet, but I'm guessing if an FFDO were paired with a pilot who is anti-FFDO, the objecting pilot would be removed from the sequence, and would not be paid for it. We've already gotten email to that effect.

Along the same lines, did anyone read the anti-FFDO tirade by Les Abend in Flying a few months back? All of the typical ignorant arguments- might shoot out a window, hijacker might take it away, fights in the cockpit escalating into shootouts, etc. The only thing is Les isn't an ignorant member of the press- he's a captain for American!
