What is up people? This is really getting me fired up. This morning on HLN there was a retired American pilot basically hanging this NWA crew out to dry over an incident that had just begun investigation. I cannot find the clip, but he did not beat around the bush. Basically he said that the crew was wrong and deserved to be punshed.

I cannot say that what the crew did was right, but I would never make a public statement of any kind against this or any crew that had a news worthy incident. Not even the Mesa crew that fell asleep. (Mesa Sucks, btw.)

I see so many times examples of pilots publically, or over a frequency, criticizing others. Who's side are we on people??

Well-

Really, which is worse, falling asleep for a little while, then offically being diagnosed to sleep apnea, or jacking off to anime porn all the way across the breadbasket of the country?

-I'll let you be the judge.
(Darn regional pilots-they could ruin a wet dream!)

The real problem is this is going to cause a ton of fallout that will affect every single one of us negatively.

Pilots falling asleep only serves to highlight scheduling/fatigue issues which will most likely help us out.

So yes, this will be bad, very bad IMHO. I am not going to say that I would never screw up. But if there is no evidence that you had the computers out, tell everyone you fell asleep due to fatigue. Stating that they were on the computers cost them their jobs, their pilots licenses, and caused federal legislation that could hurt us to get introduced.

Well, crap like this is what changes the rules for everyone else, and makes everyones lives harder!!! This kind of crap is what gives them politicians in D.C. Ammo to make all of our lives worse off. They did it when those idiots crashed in Buffalo, now this.

Everyone reads, listens to music, watches a movie, or works on their computer every once in a while on a long flight, but most guys make sure that SITUATIONAL AWARENESS stays in tact and not out the door, situational awareness did not exist in that cockpit, and they screwed up, they got what they deserved, it sucks to loose your license and your job, but this is a safety oriented job and the outcome could have been worse like a crash or something, but luckily that did not happen....

We shall see what is in store for all of us from good old uncle Sam................

I agree NE, but I think that by saying that they were "on a company website" they are hoping it looks better than looking up youtube clips.

With all the publicity that fatigue, pay, etc has been getting recently, I think they chose to go another route to save face. (I mean, after all, aren't low pay and QOL only regional airline problems?) I would be willing to bet it will come out that they did indeed fall asleep, but that remains to be found out in the investigation. Quiet on a CVR could be sleeping, or could be quietly looking at a computer. It could also be quietly monitoring the progress of the flight... I've been known to do that from time to time as well...

Point being, while I am *speculating* on here, a semi public forum, among fellow pilots, I cannot fathom what would cause a retired MAJOR AIRLINE pilot to go on national TV and hand out a guilty verdict.

Maybe NWA/Delta management paid these guys to do this so that all pilots will recieve negative press and the public will demand that we are paid less.

That is the real tragedy, playing with a laptop is getting more attention and moaning from the news than a crash caused by fatigue and poor policy.

This isn't much different than ex-ball players on a sportscast slamming Mike Vick, Plaxico, etc.

It's pretty much indefensible that you lost comm, didn't respond to ACARS and flew past the end of your "Magenta Line". Laptops, falling asleep, argument or whatever. The excuses are just a sideshow. Granted, I hope to never be on the other end of an incident like this, but it seems that a "We f...ed up" would have been a better response.
