Although I enjoy flying, it's getting to me and I'm feeling burned out. I've been with a very small regional for over a year and we're losing lots of junior pilots but very few senior people. We aren't in a position to buy more planes so no upgrade coming soon which means no pay increase.

Thinking about just giving it up and going back to finish my graduate degree. Sometimes, it's not worth flying professionally when payscales are low. Yes, I know what I was getting into - still, just feel the need to vent.

How many others are feeling the same? How many want to go back to school? I'm concerned about the future as an airline pilot. I wonder how much more downward spiral is going to occur. Being a professional pilot is a hard way to make a living.

Like I said, just need to vent a little. Maybe it's time to start my own business and fly for pleasure...

Thanks for listening.

Well,

If you've only been at the regional for 1yr+ and already feeling the rub, why not apply elsewhere? There are other regionals and majors hiring

If it's the flying - well that's a different story...I don't know your history but with 1yr+ if you are already thinking about giving it up...maybe you should before you invest too much and can't later on.

It doesn't happen over night...for some it does but for the majority of us it take 9-10+ years to finally get going with things like major hired/pay/quality of life etc

Why not just take a vacation? I'm assuming you have at least a week or so you can use if you've been at your regional for a year. Get away for a while and don't even think about flying. The first year at a regional is probably one of the worst you'll have in your career.....the pay and bennies only get better from there. Search for things to look forward too, even if they are just things like a few extra bucks to your hourly rate next year. Jump ship to a better operator if you like, reputable joints like ASA, Skywest, Expressjet, etc are hiring, but if I were you I'd just sit tight and count my blessings that I had a job.

Or do one better and see if you can take a leave of absence. It might take more than a week to sort things out. Either way I wouldn't leave permanently unless you have a real plan in place. good luck

Okay

You are too new to complain. Have patience, could be worse, you could be a 4 and a half year FO and looking at two more years minimum. YOU EITHER LOVE THIS JOB OR DONT. Shut up or get out.

I know this is my first post but I have been monitoring this site for over a year just to look for good rumors but havent found didly, but after I have seen that post I couldnt help but reply. We may have one of the slowest upgrades but besided comair, we are the highest paid. Comair doesnt have turboprop pilots.

Come to Air France. Oh wait, your stupid american ratings do not work in our country.

HAHAHAHA Suffer

Thats really funny considering the last I looked, Airbus's philosophy was to create aircraft that were "error resistant" which basically makes a pilot useless. I wonder why that is? Maybe its because peple like you (The French) are the stupid ones who cant fly!!!

Saucisse's a TROLL...anyone flying an Air France A340 wouldn't even bother with posting on flightinfo, because they would be too busy enjoying the great overnights in Hong Kong, San Fran or Rio...he's probably a student pilot flying a C152.

HowlinMadMurdoc,
Yeah, take a leave of absence. Also, going to another regional may not be a bad thing...you could take a break between jobs and take a nice vacation...this let's you get things in perspective. Low pay, crappy overnights, mergers, furloughes and slow upgrade times...I can understand your frustration...

Saucisse, you stupid frog. How can you be so proud of a country that was invaded twice in a 30 year period? Who was it that saved your A$$ both times?

We all get tired and burned out. Take vitamins make sure you get out run, play baseball, softball, get on some kind of team. Fish do whatever. It helps, I flew 100+ hours each month for the first four months this year, I am still tired. I just bid reserve and try to give myself some time to get back in the groove again.

I think you might have meant to say "groove"?

So your disillusioned just think how the senior people feel... Theyve taken massive retirement and salary hits yet management keeps asking for more. Sorry man but ive learned this is a tough buisness and you have to just stick it out. If you dont want to fly then dont do it, nothing is worse than being miserable. Its really that easy if you want to fly for a career then do it, enjoy the adventure and see where it takes you. If you have decided this isnt for you no big deal it happens all the time. You can start over and find a new career. BTW its the same story at every airline a lot of junior people leave but senior people dont really leave nearly as much. No matter where you go you have to rely on growth to be a captain. Growth never lasts forever anywhere and someday all the growth at the regionals will stop and then what? Either find a good company to work for that you wouldnt mind being FO for a long time or you can always try rolling the dice for a quick upgrade. May work, may not. Thats the problem though you are pretty much always relying on growth. Luck is a big factor.

Step back and take a vacation or apply to another regional since you have only been in a short time. The grass is not always greener. There is B.S. in every job. Some more than others. Guaranteed that if you leave you will be craving more than ever to get back within a short period.
