proud D*#*# bag here...

Yep... that Chief of Staff who had the brilliant idea of reorganizing the USAF... wasn't he the same Chief of Staff who had the brilliant idea of those new flight suits with side zipper pockets so he could scratch himself?.... oh yeah... and the cutting of the fighter wings from 40 to 20 and causing the entire pilot shortage that the USAF is just now beginning to recover from?

Yep... that guy was a fighter pilot d*#$) bag. I remember him. ;-)

I'm sure you can tell by now.... I grew up as a boom operator in SAC...then a pilot in AMC... followed by learjets in USAFE.

Bottom line is that I got hired by paying my $50... and I bought a case of wine for both of those 5 year FedEx guys who sponsored me. ;-)

I pity the fool who has an attitude like the one I saw here. Catch a clue, bratha.... it's not a thick skin mentality that most guys here lack. It's simply that they/we already wear purple and enjoy flying together. It's called, "enjoying life because I've already proven myself."

I could give a crap if I prove myself to you. So, vent away if you like...but understand that many people read this board. That one whom you seek for the cherished "senior sponsorship" might be the one that you just insulted.

Wuv,

Kav

Sponsor

Capt. Megadeth,
A sponsor would be the same as a recommendation from another pilot which is inputed on the website along with your app. Your "sponsor" would also get your info and submit it along with a letter. The more sponsors the better.
Good luck.

General tip for wannabes out there:

Being nice counts for something. Take is for what its worth. There are exactly 10,000 guys out there with more PIC, experience, etc trying to get a job.

I've met people on this board who helped me tremendously to have the opportunities I did at JetBlue and FedEx. Had dinner with back in 01 with a young JB FO who is now an intervewing captain. He gave me lots of great advice for my pending interview. I never questioned his all civilian/regional background, and he never called me a fighter-pilot blowhard. In fact, we had a great dinner and his wife did a wonderful job of explaining some of the ups and downs of airline life to my bride. I'm glad I didn't take the opportunity to let him know about how great my hands were or about how superior I was to most other pilots at his company...

As a fighter pilot, I measure myself not by all the "heavy douchebags" I've gunned (and other than a couple of defensive reaction training sessions for MC/HC 130s, I can't think of a time when we "gun" heavies anyway), but rather the other fighter pilots I've gunned along the way. Competition is good, as it brings out our best and helps prepare us for the day when it really counts. Funny thing is, most of the guys I've whipped up on were young and have morphed into very capable guys who went on to be IPs, WIC grads, etc, and the guys who absolutely schooled me (and there are several on the property at FDX) were some of the biggest champions for helping me get hired. I've never gotten the best of someone in a BFM engagement without discussing HOW I was able to do something, and I've never lost a BFM engagement without getting feedback from the other person on the how/why they were able to be successful. To me, the mark of a figher pilot is not only results, but rather the relentless pursuit of perfection along the way.

That being said, rolling in on the same folks who might help you reach your goals is, shall we say..."less than perfect".

Anyone who is an MD11 FO has had a type ride...i.e. is type rated (as a captain) in the MD11. He may not have the seniority to hold and bid captain, but as far as stick/rudder/knowledge skills he is capable in the FAA's eyes (you Maddog types correct me if I'm wrong here). Most guys will tell you the MD11 program is challenging, so anyone walking your stuff in from the MD program will be taken seriously--even if they have only been here 5 years.

And as for douchebags...my understanding is that they A-do very important work and B-get to go to some VERY interesting places. Sounds to me like most FedEx pilots (this one included) would be proud to be called a douchebag.

Albie, looks like Tony C and Jakal might be giving you a run for your money in the interview prep business since all this has been for free! Listen, somebody says that the ONLY way to get an interview is to get a meeting with Jack Lewis, and I say that if that is the case then I wasted my 50 bucks. It was our esteemed colleague Jakal who started the fire bombing. Let us get back to the original question here:

HAS ANYONE HAD AN INTERVIEW WITH FEDEX WITHOUT THE HELP OF A HEAVY HITTER?

BobbyB-

First of all, to get an interview you must have competitve times---2200 TT is NOT competitive in todays market.

Second, you DON'T have to have a "heavy hitter" to get an interview at FDX. What you do need is a little luck, good timing, persistance, good attitude, and a LOR never hurts.

This is probably the toughest the aviation job market has been EVER. There are so many top notch quality applicants applying today that you have to do something extra special to get noticed or hired.

Letting off steam on your peers probably isn't the best approach to take but if it helps you feel better by all means...let it rip.

Is there a way to find out if you know somebody at Fedex (ie pilot list) without getting someone in trouble? It's hard to stay in touch with every guy you have ever flown with or worked with. Still trying to find my "special" friend on the inside.

Sigh....Breathe a minute BobbyB and listen for a change...

Sigh......

Breathe a minute, BobbyB and listen for a change.

I had hopes for you. I thought you were different than that stereotypical overzealous, young, fighter pilot dude who was always so busy flapping his wings and screaming out how good he was that he never heard anything anyone else ever said.

Go back and look at my previous post to you. It said I was hired with two sponsors who had been with the company five years. I would call a heavy hitter someone who was a captain and had been around 10+ years.

Of course, I'm a heavy guy... so what the heck do I know. ;-) But I am excited... because Uncle Sam's going to trust us heavy boys in my reserve unit and give us some of them there new C-17 thingies... and ya know... them there C-17s have a kewl little joystick on em so I can try to be kewl like all of them there fighter pilot guys that I've always dreamed about being as good as!

Ciao,

Kav

Okay......ENOUGH

I know Bobby B personaly, and he is a great dude! I would gladly walk his stuff into JL!

HE IS EXACTLY THE GUY I WANT TO SPEND A WEEK WITH DOING HUBTURNS!

Bobby B

Don't push it......good words yes.....money...hell NO! I'm one of those cheap a$$ pilots....training to be captain someday!

Congrats Bobby B

I can vouch for Bobby B and I agree with USNFDX. Although he's never bought me a round I have no doubt he would if he got hired by FedEx. Keep the press on Bob and congrats on other fronts.

Now that this thread seems to be dying out I'll miss the entertainment.

If USNFDX can vouch for him then he must be a good $hit.

I don't want Kerry, either, but after Nov please bring back the duck avatar. He is missed...

Question for FedEx pilots

Will FedEx hire a pilot without a degree? Does previous employment at FedEx help in the hiring process?

I don't have a degree yet (it's on my list of "things to do") and I was a FedEx Courier in MKE and LAX for almost three years.

Thanks

Peace

As hesitant as I am to speak for the folks that do the hiring, and as reluctant as I am to speak in absolutes, I still must say, in as gentle a manner as possible:

NO

Current employment is a HUGE advantage. Previous employment, while perhaps is a slight advantage, will not likely get your package closer to the top of the stack. It's certainly nowhere near as important as the published qualifications (degree being one of them) or the personal recommendation of a FedEx pilot.
