For those of you who work for either of these two (or one in the same ballpark) what is your lifestyle like? I would assume most of your flying is always at night...has to make life interesting.

Just curious -
 
You had better preface that question with, "What is your relative seniority?" Otherwise the answer doesn't mean much... just my humble opinion.
 
I flew for a DHL feeder.

To airport at 9:30pm out at 10:30 or so, land at about midnight. Eat or sleep or both at the hub then head back out to the plane at 3:30-4:00 and in the air by about 4:30. On the ground by 6:00 and on to the hotel etc. Not bad work, easy runs, no rush once you are at the hub. If I was flying out of where I live it would have been cake.-kingaira90

No flame intended but he did say he was "just currious." As many other younger pilots are that read on this board. It doesnt hurt to ask/answer a question twice.
 
Is it me or does Rhoid seem like a royal penis? I don't post all that often but I read two FedEx threads today and Rhoid showed up on both of them talking down to people. Where do we get these guys?

The same could be said about you. You ARE NOT an airline pilot so you are nowhere qualified to work at an airline. Why don't you finish college first before you start getting cocky with people who actually work in the industry.

There have been many posts I've read from his royalty. You got it right. Take a pill Rhoid, and get in line.

I'll assume mid level seniority. On the international side 12 to 15 day trips overseas. Cool for a while but the dog growls at you when you come back home. Thanksgiving in Bombay ROCKS but Christmas at Clark is the Sh!&. Calling home from India is challenging and fun too! Cheap as well, never more than 3 bucks a minute. But don't worry your union will work out all kinds of hotel discounts and what's known as a 123 at the bar.... oh wait, thats another place, forget all that. They won't do sh!&.

Domestic trips are anything from hot reserve and turns to 7 day rips. Senior guys get the turns and 2nd day air stuff flown parlty when the sun is still out. The rest sit the sorts. Leave the hotel at 9p fly 1 to 5 legs to the sort. Sit or sleep for 3 to 5 hours and fly 1 to 5 back to the hotel. Sleep while the maids are running their vaccums into the wall in the room next to you or constuction is going on on the street below or better yet in the hallway.

The best part is all the chicks. Believe it or not there is a large contingent of freight pilot groupies out their. Youv'e probably seen them hanging out in the hotel bars between 7 and 9 am. Lots of hottie chick freight pilots out their too!

As far as the lifestyle goes, you can't beat it. The cargo doesn't complain and you push when the door closes (going early is common, except in MEM) and you don't have to sit and wave goodbye to 100+ people. There is a huge mix of flying.....International, Domestic or a mix of both depending on the type of equipment you're on. As far as the night stuff goes, I live in Memphis and sit afternoon reserve. I rarely fly at night and for the almost 4 years have never had more than 50 guys below me in the seat I was in at the time. (I bid to the highest paying seat I can hold) Even as a junior guy you can fly mostly days if you are willing to sit reserve. Some guys hate it, I don't. Whatever works for you. The night stuff really isn't bad. No traffic, quiet radios, and cleared direct from Memphis to destination. The layovers during daylight hours when stuff is actually open can be nice too. Granted, you've got to sleep during the day. That's a problem for some, but not many. (My opinion only) If you don't want to sit afternoon reserve, the good day flying lines will go much more senior, but with the hiring rates these days and the projected hiring rates, it won't take anyone long to be senior if they want to camp out in one of the more junior seats.

Question for the Purple guys: Are most of the lines mixed between day and night or are most of them one or the other? Night flying wouldn't bother me, but switching back and forth from week to week would definitely start to wear me out.
