got a question for any of you fedex people out there. are the only overseas bases in france and the philipines? are those bases junior or senior? also wondering what are the other bases in the US besides MEM and in this day and age is commuting for fedex reasonable or not worth it?
Subic is an Airbus Domicile, and is pretty Junior. Paris is a base but not a domicile. It is assigned to Airbus crew in bids for 3 months at a time. Anc is a relatively junior MD-11 domicile. Mem is easy to commute to if you live near a city served by Fedex, particularly if it's a big city served by numerous FedEx flights. Florida citys can be a little tougher by virtue of the sheer number of pilots that reside there. Also since MEM is a Northwest regional hub it is pretty accessible through them as well as Airtran. Obviously some of the the other Domiciles may not be as commuter friendly.
thanks for all the info! i have an additional question about the paris base. when they do the 3 month crew bids do the crews commute there or do they put them up in paris? how does that work? and does that end up being a junior or senior bid?
The company pays to fly you over and back pre and post trip. You don't reside there for the 3 months. As for being junior - senior, I don't know, hopefully an Airbus guy will respond to that one.
I'm not sure at what you are getting at, but you are not forced into any of these things you were mentioning. Overseas is voluntary. The beauty of Fed Ex is that there is a wide variety of things to do and everyone wants something different.
For what its worth, LAX is also a pilot domicle (MD-11 only), but is VERY senior. The number of pilots there will probably be growing in the near future.
To a certain extent it is irrelevent for you if you get hired at FedEx. You will be based in MEM setting sideways on the 727; and because this is the back side of the hiring cycle you will be there for a while. By the time you are in a position to bid for something (widebody F/O) that is based elsewhere it could be a whole new ballgame at FedEx.
