They are losing a buttload of high quality people to other good companies. Time will only tell if this will affect them in the long run
So are you saying that the guys FedEx are hiring now are sub-quality? Cause the way I read your post, it would only affect them in the long run if the guys currently being hired are not of the same "high quality" you speak of. Just wondering what your thought process was. As far as I can tell all the new hires I have flown with lately are top-notch.

No. I'm not slamming on the new hires. I am sure that they are excellent quality folks themselves. By the company not looking at the entire cadre of available talent, they are surely passing on some excellent fits to the FEDEX company mold that other companies will most certainly benefit from over time.

Just got done with first day of DC10 s/o school.

They told us that 2 of the ex-UAL "grey ghosts" have been re-leased for another 18 months. And no aircraft are scheduled for MD10 conversion as of now.

And the 737 deal is dead. USAir decided they want them. Got this from someone who got it from the head of standards for one of the fleets.
 
Keep every 3 holer on the property and buy more!

Just say no to 2 man cockpits. May the hiring continue!
 
I heard a new one last night. The captain I flew with said that they were looking at closing the LAX base because it wasn't working out as planned. Has anyone else heard this?

Now that is a good one. I'm going to start spreading that one around ASAP.

No offense to the dudes out there in LA. I hope it's not true for their sake.

I guess a LOR is mandatory.

Is Subic Bay still a domicile? If so how do guys commute there?

How long can a new-hire expect to sit sideways? Is there a possibility of going into the panel on a widebody?

Lots of apps, LORs always help.

Subic is still a domicile. Some guys live there, others commute. Obviously the more senior you are, the easier it is to commute to your line (you are able to hold more commuter friendly lines).

How long will a new hire sit sideways? Who knows. In the past it has been about 8 months. For me, it will be just shy of 3 years. Our hiring looks like it will continue for the forseeable future so, if I were to take a wild guess, I'd say you will sit the panel for 18 months.

The DC-10 panel has been offered in the past to new hires, but only during periods of mass hiring. I don't see it being offered to new hires for sometime (just another guess). I would imagine you would have the opportunity to get the DC-10 panel in less than a year.

Heard today that they may be upping training to 24 per month...that came from a couple of instructors in the training dept.

Good luck to you johnnyV, your profile indicates that you should be just about ripe for any Major or National...sucks that industry is what it is right now, but you should find a good place for your self in this industry.

I think to a certain degree that FedEx does care about looking at the entire cadre (of qualified applicants). A friend of mine was a 46 year old retired "tweety bird" instructor and had to get some civilian time before Fedex took him on...but he made it.

It really appears to me when I bump into the FedEx crews, that the new hires look so sharp it's freaking intimidating. I don't think they have a problem with quality. I see what you are saying about letting some quality guys go by the way, but they can't hire everybody.

I must say, they hire quite a diverse bunch over there. I recently ran into a 727 Captain that totally reminded me of Mad Max's boss in the original movie...Yea, handle bar mustache, bald head, taller than a freak and just a...a big damm friendly pilot dude. Really cool guy. He treated us feeder pukes as if we were his own guys. We had to stop him from putting on a pot of coffee for us...no lie.

Some of the crews are a little bit more reserved than others, but when you catch them in break room, 99 percent will say hello.
