Uppercrust you spend so much time slammin others that I thought you MUST work for someone better than us LCC scum. You cant have too much job satisfaction if your thinking of leaving your current company. Come on man, tell us who you work for. You sure sound like a wannabe to me. I also doubt FedEx hires immature kids.

Would meeting the FedEx rep at the DFW job fair help get an interview???

It helped me a lot...but it was a while ago. After I met with the hiring folks I got a call two weeks later for an interview. I also already had my three recs in, but no sponsor (we didn't need them back then).

Good luck.

Need some advice

I have a unique situation. Retiring from the military in 2 weeks going through an unplanned divorce (I'm the dumpee) and need income fast (meaning minimum months. I plan to go to the job fair in Dallas on the 28th. FEDEX is my first choice, I live in AK and eventually want to be based here.

I'm thinking that I might get hired by SWA faster than FEDEX (assumes I get the type) but I'm wondering if the type might hurt me at FEDEX. If you guys think that I'm right I plan on doing the type at HPA early Feb.

I might consider quitting SWA if I eventually get offered a job at FEDEX.

What should I be concerned about? Ideas? I know I'm missing a lot of angles so help me if you can.

Oh, and what's the MUST READ book about FEDEX?

thx, NutKase

My 2 cents:
I don't know if the type will hurt, but the job would. I'm sure others members will graciously correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you will get called to interview if you are actively flying for another major (furloughed: maybe / flying: no).

It sounds like what you should be concerned about is getting a job asap, and not being stingy with your resumes & apps. If speed is as critical as you say, apply with everyone who is hiring. Hopefully you end up where you want, but would you rather spend some time unemployed or flying something smaller for less money for a while? Consider opening up your options until you get "the call." Your competition is too numerous to count and has your experience plus airline experience. I wish you well but don't count your chickens just yet.

What you should be concerned about is preparing yourself for an interview. You can DIY, but many have good things to say about http://www.emeraldcoastinterviewconsulting.com/ Also, check out http://www.willflyforfood.cc/index.htm When you are at the job fair, treat every job lead as the one that is going to be your ticket...it may just be, at least for a while.

The only must read book I know is "Checklist for Success." Get it from http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1560275065/qid=1137747397/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/103-0559929-1291048?s=books&v=glance&n=283155(there is no "must read" for FedEx)

Unless you have a good non-flying job lined up, go for SWA. You have to pass the sim or no job so stay flying on the side or get good prep. Sim check is a good test of your recency of experience and is not easy.

Unless you have well placed and/or multiple sponsors, you WILL NOT get interviewed at FedEx quickly. You may get lucky, but don't count on it. I do know the interview to hire time has sped up recently at FedEx and is forecast to stay that way for at least 12 months. I have a few friends recently hired there.

SWA will interview you up to a year before you leave active duty. If that is a viable option, do not delay on your type. At SWA, since some interview a year out, the time from pool to hire seems to take longer.

Can't tell you for sure if they will frown upon your SWA efforts. Be able to explain it to the interviewers/ACP. There are former SWA pilots (hired since 2002) at FedEx. But if SWA pilots start turning down job offers you could get hosed. FedEx is like an elephant, very long memory. They will interview and hire who they think will come to, and stay, in class.

Tidbit--

FedEx hires about 70-85% of those they interview. Tough to get interview.

Southwest hires about 25-35% of those they interview, sometimes more. Easier to get interview.

Having the type won't hurt. I had it when I interviewed and was in the pool at SW as well. Neither topic came up in the interview. They are pretty confident that if you get hired here you will stay put.

I would worry more about getting my shat together as quick as possible because the process at either company can and more than likely will take at least a year to come to fruition.

I can't convince my buddies still on active duty how much in advance they need to get their apps in if they want to have even a chance of starting at FedEx or anywhere else the day after they get out of the military. I would plan on a minimum of a year from app to interview at either place, particularly at FedEx.

Nutkase, I respectfully submit that if you are retiring in 2 weeks and haven't already applied to SW and FedEx you are way behind the power curve. Take the first flying job you are offered, keep updating at FedEx and SW, and if you are able to land an offer at either one then you can decide to stay or go.

Good luck.

as a secondary question, historically what seems to be the unofficial "cut off age" for new hires, especially retired from military, etc outfits?

I would assume those guys are 45-50ish

Obviously I doubt any 121 carrier is hiring 58 year olds, however, how about 50?

When i got hired in a class of twelve i believe we had a 54 year old...we do hire some older retired military guys...they know the will hit 60 and go to the back seat of the 10 or 72...

Back in the day, NWA hired a few guys over 60 (they went to the panel)....

Anything else is age discrimination.
