Hi all-

Would anyone know what equipment one could expect as a new hire? Would most guys be on the 727 panel, or is there usually some widebody slots available too? Also, how long before you're off the panel?

Any information is greatly appreciated, thanks!

FedEx is planning to hire into the right seat of all our aircraft starting in April most likely. No plans are ever for sure though until they happen at FedEx.

The rumor is that some guys will be "hand picked" to go to the right seat of the MD-11... that is, some MD-11 pros that are going to the line will conveniently be able to hold those seats.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy as a clam to sit sideways in the 72 but, how do you "hand pick" guys for certain seats in a seniority based system?

Normal new hire assignment is MEM 727 SO. This covers about 95% of recent new hire assignments. Some exceptions are:
  • Since classes starting in November three new hires were awarded SFS A300 FO. This was strictly volunteer only; these guys wanted to go there.
  • Every once in a while, a MEM DC-10 SO spot is available for a new hire class.
In the future, as another poster has said, some new hires will be awarded right seat MD-11 and A300 positions.

You are correct in that once a new hire indoc class starts, the company can't simply say "you, you, and you, are MEM MD-11 FOs and the rest of the class is MEM 727 SOs". If there are equipment choices the 1st day of class, everyone gets to bid on them based on your class seniority (the last 4 of your SSN).

However, the very easy way around this is to have 100 guys or so all in a hiring pool. Then, simply call 5, 10, or 12 guys from the pool, give them all MD-11 FO assignments, and then run a new hire class just for them. (which is most likely how its going to work). This completely gets rid of the '1st day of class equipment choice problem'.

Copy........well explained.

I've heard they are selecting individuals for the MD11 F/O slots based on heavy intnl' experience for ANC. These new hires would be in the April class.

That's why I said "hand picked" in quotations. Trust me, if they want to assign certain people the MD-11 they will do what it takes to do so. Like others said, have a class of people out of the pool that only have that for a choice. It has already been made clear that you don't get pulled out of the pool based on time spent in it.

One of my references was talking to the head of flight standards the other day. Apparently the MD-11 right seat selection will look favorably on glass cockpit experience primarily, e.g. CRJ and the like.
