Well, I was hoping to report that the classes in October were up to 16 people per class, but there were only 12 per class. I guess the rumors of bigger class sizes were just rumors for now. The Oct classes started on the 4th and the 11th, last seniority number assigned was 4268. Those are the only facts I have to report.

Rumors: heard yesterday that there will only be one class in Nov, a double class which I guess means 24 people. Two years ago they had a double class in Nov and they must of liked the way it worked out because it sounds like they are going to do that again. Start a class of 24 in late Nov, no class in Dec, and start back up again in Jan, then 24 per month for the forseeable future. Numbers like 300 new hires this year were bantered about, don't know if it was this fiscal year (although I would assume so) or not, but that jibes pretty well with 24 per month. Heard a number of 8000 folks in the application process waiting for a chance to interview right now.

Folks who are interviewing now are looking at Jan class dates (my guess would be the 3rd and the 10th, but that is just a guess) if they make it through the interview process. Sounds like there is no pool right now, just interviewing to fill class slots. I've got to believe that hiring will continue at a steady pace based upon our new (to us) aircraft coming in and the increase in demand with the economy picking up and the new lines to China that were awarded this week.

The back of the Boeing is still very short, I have averaged 2 calls per night this week for draft trips. I imagaine that when I start reserve again next week I will be rode hard and put away wet. I also took a look at the training letter from the last bid there must be about 150 or so vacancies in the back of the Boeing that will need to be filled by the time the training cycle is complete. There were a lot of new hires (Sep class) who were able to hold the back of the DC-10 with an Apr training date, so those folks are going to have to be replaced as well.

After more than 2 years in the back of the Boeing I was finally able to hold the right seat of the Boeing or the back of the DC-10 but decided to wait another bid or two to see what it will be like to get off reserve first. Next month I got my first line ever, so after about 3 months of bidding lines I was finally able to hold a fairly decent one and get off reserve.

Amazing the difference a couple of years can make, some hired 1 year ahead of me have been in the right seat for over 2 years, I couldn't even hold a line until after 2 years. Folks getting hired now will be able to move up a seat after 6 months. Good to be at the front of the wave, but I'm just happy I caught the tail end of any wave. The movement should pick up nicely here as the hiring trend continues. Sweet.

It also sounds like more folks are not making it through the sim than ever before, it might be a really good idea to get some serious sim prep in a heavy before the interview if you do get the call.

Best of luck to those getting the calls for the interview.

ATR-DRIVER,

Just for the record, you don't actually have to make it. Just pour it. And for some real slugs that you get stuck with, you have to actually put their cream and sugar in (along with whatever else you feel like sticking in it).

Now back to your regularly scheduled string of hiring rumors. 600 in the next calendar year.

Actually, I usually don't even pour it, I just hand them the jug. Sometimes they ask for the jug, other times they just ask for some joe. I do think its a bit over the top for them to expect you to put cream and sugur in there for them. I don't mind pouring it, I just hate having to lug the jug from the AOC to the jet.

As for the jug, it is just another thing to carry, one that I will never actually ever use, seeing as I don't drink coffee. One of the small joys of being the coffee be-atch!

Now back to a really good rumor, I like the sound of 600 a lot more than I do the 300. Bring them on!

FedEx Hiring Rumors

Just to add more spice to the rumors. Heard two different stories regarding hiring for next calendar year (both second hand of course). First from one of the CPs: 600. Second, from VP Flight Ops: 480. Either would be great news.

Another rumor from someone in Training & Standards went something like 16 per class, 2 classes per month, NOV thru JAN.
For the past 2 months I've been used every day that I have been on reserve. FJ, you WILL get abused.

"I just hate having to lug the jug from the AOC to the jet."

So....you guys get coffee to take out to the jet? Is that in the contract? We sure don't get that. We do get a cooler with bottled water, though.

HAHA....Fedex probably considers the coffee jug's to be their "fatigue management program". That's what UPS would call it....

Actually, yes, it is in the contract.

Each flight from a base (MEM, LAX, SUB, ANC) or IND and AFW shall be catered with hot coffee and at least 1 ice chest containing water, ice and an assortment of juices and sodas. Flights from outstations are catered with hot coffee, water and ice.

S/Os or F/Os get the coffee jug from the AOC if the jet doesn't have a coffee maker (I don't know which ones have a coffee maker, I know the Boeing doesn't) and take it to the jet. Thankfully we don't have to haul out the cooler too!

I can only imagine how much money we spend every day on coffee that usually gets dumped at the end of the night because very seldom does anybody actually drink it (in my short experience). Good to have though if you drink it and you end up holding a while in the middle of the night and you need a little pick me up.

I would prefer they provide a six pack of Mountain Dew, maybe I can convince the negotiating committee to push for that in the next session!

The MD11s all have expresso machines, so you get that extra "flavor" from the potable water containers that the mechanics say have NEVER been cleaned. I wouldn't even shower with that water much less drink it!

Skoal works, too, though that's not allowed, is it?

Catered . . . what does that mean to you?

When you have a social gathering catered, who brings the food to the event? You, or the caterer?

What's in the contract is we'll be catered. The issue has been raised before that the coffee jug, like the ice chest with "assortment of juices and sodas," should be at the jet. FPA and The Company agreed to let it slide.

I don't believe the negotiators were coffee toters.

:(

Walked a friend in 2 weeks ago to one of the ACPs and was told 600-750 new hires over the next year and a half, one class of 16 in Nov and Dec then back to at least 24 per month for the forseeable future. With 50 more retirements than anticipated this year so far, China expansion and a Zurich domicile within a year, seems like the bean counters are finally realizing that we are behind the hiring curve. All this info came straight from one of the ACPs as relayed to him from JL so I'd say it's pretty solid...for now.

Yeah, a lot of coffee gets dumped, but it's nice to have it when you need it.

Rumor I heard a couple of days ago is two classes per month of 16 are coming soon--and will continue long term. The training department wasn't asked--the decision was just made to increase the numbers. Also heard there's another bid coming in January.

Latest from my source in the ACP office:

- Two classes of 16 in Nov., none in Dec., resuming in Jan.

- 300 in calendar year 2005.

Mountain Dew

We need more Diet Cokes in the coolers. One ain't enough.
And another thing, I've been pouring the coffee AND adding the moos and blues;am I going to hear from my union rep about this? Should I stop serving and simply pass the jug?
P.S. - Another rumor has it we screwed up the deal for 73's about a year ago and the current strategy is to get more A310s to cover the lift as the 72's get phased out.

Personally, pouring a buddy a cup of coffee is one thing, but putting cream & sugar in it is simply B.S.! Just throw the bag with the cups and condiments up on the center consol and let them do it for themselves - geez, these Captains and/or F/O's that are asking for this "extra fine treatment" are TOOLS, don't let them take advantage of you over petty crap like that - you already have the hardest job on that plane in my opinion.....

Didn't intend to take this off on a tangent....

It's True

I would say that 99% of S/Os pour and prepare the coffee just the way that the front end requests. More than anything, it's a courtesy and in my experience NEVER demanded nor expected. It's much better to pour at the S/Os desk, than to have it all over the console. RFOs (MD-11) perform the same courtesy -- it's much appreciated. Don't sweat the small stuff. One caveat -- I would NEVER, NEVER pour anything for a non-member!!!!!!!!

I dont want to sound like I have a negative attitude (but I will anyway), but I didn't work as hard as I have been just to pour a cup for someone.

Oh boy, you'll be a joy to be with at 3 am. Don't make a BFD about pouring the coffee, it sounds like you'll have plenty of other stuff to worry about.
