The following are tid-bits from an FCIF (Flight Crew Infromation File) on hiring from the Chief Pilot:

I said I'd tell you all when the hiring website is open for new
applications...and it is. It was opened about a week or so ago and appears
to be working okay...we did a lot of modifications to it in the last year
so if you hear of problems, let us know asap.

The hiring scenario shapes up like this. We've hired 30 people so far and
have 10 more arriving on May 3rd...that's it officially, supposedly for the
year. We'll see…..

In the meantime, we have reconfirmed the pool people for availability.

We will interview a few more people to keep the pool built up in case there
is a rapid requirement for new hires asap. There are about 40 people in the
pool now.

Rumors of 100-250 more pilots this year and 250 a year for the next five
years still abound out there. I'm not saying it won't happen but the bean
counters haven't said do it yet either. If it's painted purple and on the
ramp, well...you know what I mean.

The above is directly copied from the FCIF. Some internal information was removed.

Does he mean fiscal year or calendar year?...I sure hope it's fiscal year...

hiring rumor

A friend of mine in the mid-April new hire class mentioned that "Bruce Cheeeever" told the class expect hiring to be in the hundreds this year and for the near future.

I personally wouldn't trust Cheever as "far as I could throw him", but thought I should pass on what the FedEx propaganda machine is puttting out......so you can decide

Thought I would throw in a little more. Just did my WU and PC and while over in training, all the MD11 instructors have supposedly been told to "not expect any days off for a while", which is code for get ready to ramp up the training for a while. Seems like I hear that everytime I go over there and talk to them, but it always seems to be true. So... you decide.

Another point worth mentioning - - and this should get some comments - - is that he's entertaining the idea "to maybe interview direct family members furloughed from other majors...brothers and sisters, sons and daughters..."

All those in favor of nepotism say "AYE."

:)

Is a current FE written required or needed to be competitive?
Mine is more than 2 years old. Is there any hope to getting an interview without a LOR or a friend at FEDEX?
Any other information would be helpful.

Jeckel,

You need to have current FE written, within two years. Also, I would say your chances of getting an interview w/o a rec. is highly unlikely. In fact you may need more than one.

Given some of the things happening in the training department and on the line, it makes sense that we'd be doing alot more hiring in the next few years... I haven't looked to be definative, but the new and improved fleet plan is that we will be keeping the DC-10's for the forseeable future... Possibly because: (Watch out!!! Rumors and opinions to follow...!!!) 1) the international mail contract is in the works and the DC10's will be flying that freight into Europe, 2) the Air Force has purchased from us the DC10 to MD10 conversion slots to turn their KC10's into "MD-10" tankers... Therefore, we will be keeping the 10s and possiblly using the ones in the desert intstead of converting them to MD's... 3)JL's email to the crew force about "persistent" rumors (which I have heard none except from his email) of hiring in the 200-250 range for the forseeable future... If we keep the DC-10's we'd have to adjust our hiring plan to keep up with the S/O slots... (although I've heard that 60 individuals over the age of 60 now occupy the back seat of the DC-10)

I was jumpseating from IND last night on a DC-10 with a FO who was on IOE... He was saying that he knew some DC-10 guys who had bid the MD11, actually started their first week in training, and then they were given the option to discontinue the MD11 training because we were all told that the DC-10 fleet was being reduced, and it appears not to be the case.... The S/O, who had a late May MD-11 training date was informed that he could move his training date up due to "unforseen vacancies" in the MD11 training department....

Just a few tidbits for you guys to consider....Hope to see you all on the property soon....
Take Care,

I'll second that. I used to fly the 727 from the left seat on the USPS runs, the same stuff they're doing now, with two internal LOR's, including one from a senior training Captain, and still haven't heard a word... Thought that I'd at least get an interview with that background, but here I sit just one of the hopeful... And Memphis is SO close! :)

Good luck!

I had recs in, but it was not until one of them asked me for my resume, and walked in for a face to face meeting with the CP. A week later my phone was ringing.

Similar experience

I think there are 2 things you need to do. One is have somebody walk the resume in, preferably more than one person. That can't hurt.

The other is to update every month.

I think the walk in is more important, but not everybody can do that.

Another thing for those waiting for the call: my call came late at night and it was a recorded message from Beverly that gave me a number to call to schedule the interview. I don't know if that is the standard method of contact or if they hadn't been able to get ahold of me for a while, but I was surprised that they would contact me with a recorded message. When I answered the phone and got a computer voice that said: "you have a recorded message from" I almost hung up the phone. The recording wasn't very clear and I wasn't expecting the call at night (what was I thinking, its FedEx after all, why not call at NIGHT!) but something made me listen to it anyway. I'm sure glad I did. I had to scramble out of bed to get a pen and write the number down before the computer hung up. When I called back to schedule the interview they followed up with a letter and paperwork, but I shudder to think how long I would have been delayed had I hung up on the recording.

Hopefully a bunch of folks will be getting some of those calls soon. I did hear from a sim instructor last week that there were some interviews going on the week before, but I didn't personally see anybody in suits.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'll have to ask those guys to do that if they get a chance sometime soon...

As for the recorded message? Guess I need to put pen and paper by every phone in the house now... :D

MD10/11

I don't quite understand the politics concerning the MD10 program.
It seems like FedEx had a whole bunch of conversions on order. Now it seems like it has fallen out of favor....

Is it because the conversion is too $$...
not reliable...
or is it cheaper to have a FE (DC10) than convert...
aquiring a different airframe instead...?

Politics?

Z: I don't think any of the pilots at FedEx understand the politics of the MD10 conversion program either. A couple of months ago the company had an excess bid for DC10 S/Os and now they are trying to buy back vacation in the Capt and F/O seats in the DC10. There is a lot going on behind the scenes here that none of the pilots are privey to, any more than somebody off the street. There are people in the company paid big bucks to manage the current fleet and I guess they and the bean counters will do so the best they can.

The company is good at keeping things under wraps, such as $2.4 Billion acquisitions and such. I haven't met a pilot here yet who wasn't surprised by that. New jets, conversions and fleet plans are just as mysterious for some reason as well.

Keeps things interesting though.

Not sure about the MD pipeline, I have a friend doing the Pro Instructor program, he's still in training.
BUT, word is, FedEx has realized how many more pilots we need, and may be willing to start paying for them. Flight Ops would like to see steady stream of new hires per month indefinitely. I believe the original request was 280 this CALENDAR year. Once again, until the new hires are painted purple and sitting on the ramp...(BTW I have received my purple paint job, LOL)
New equipment rumor is as follows - lots of talk about 737 3s and 4s (USAIR) with steam gages. Problem is, Flight Ops wants glass to make it easier to transition to HUDs in 2005. Pay more now, pay less later. Company wants dirt-cheap planes pay less now, decide whether to pay more later. I also heard rumors of A320s because of side-stick control - similar to A380 control. Nobody knows for sure, as seems to be the case with all info here.
Bottom line - poolies, keep drown-proofing, this still-soggy ex-poolie believes you'll be here soon. May? maybe not; June, possibly. This year, I have to believe definitely.

Hey expoolies

Just curious as to when FedEx assigns your seniority number? Is it the first day on the property or after your line check? I’ve heard both rumors.

Thanks.
