Intrepid Leasing commits to 20 A330 freighters

Following the authorization to offer the A330 Freighter last summer, Airbus has secured a commitment for the newest member of the A330/A340 Family - the A330-200F. U. S.-based Intrepid Aviation Group has signed a Letter of Intent for the purchase of 20 A330-200Fs, the newest freighter to join the Airbus fleet. First delivery to Intrepid is expected in early 2010.

"When we shifted our focus a few years back to widebody freighters, we began to keep a close eye on developments at Airbus," said Ron Anderson, CEO of Intrepid Aviation. "We are excited to be a launch customer for the A330 Freighter, and know it will serve us and our customers well. Its size, range and exceptional economics make it very attractive for airlines needing a medium- to long-range widebody freighter. Throughout its history Intrepid has maintained a focus on the world freighter market requirements and believes the A330-200F will address the significant needs of the industry in the decade beginning in 2010."

New York-based Reservoir Capital Group is the primary shareholder in Intrepid Aviation. "We are excited to be partnering with Ron Anderson and the management team at Intrepid Aviation on the purchase of these A330-200F aircraft," Craig Huff, President and co-founder of Reservoir. This activity is consistent with our investment approach of partnering with world-class management teams in areas that we view as long-term attractive."

"One of the great advantages of the A330 Freighter is the ability for operators to switch between payload mode and range mode according to the route, maximizing performance for a customized and cost-effective flight," said Airbus COO Customers, John Leahy. "Intrepid has in the past purchased A300s and A310s, and has seen the benefits of the Airbus product and Airbus people. As a new generation of freighter, the A330-200F promises to bring a new level of technology, economic performance and environmental friendliness, to Intrepid's customers, and ours."

Depending on mode selected, the A330-200F can carry up to 64 metric tons over 4,000 nautical miles/7,400 kilometers or 69 metric tons up to 3,200 nautical miles/5,930 kilometers - non-stop. These range and payload capabilities will enable operators to grow their business by opening up or extending cargo routes they currently operate. Thanks to an optimized fuselage cross-section, it has the interior flexibility to carry a wide variety of pallet and container sizes for maximum interlining capability, offering 30 percent more volume than any freighter in its class.

The superiority of the A330 as a passenger aircraft, endorsed worldwide by 63 operators, ensures the same level of excellence with the A330-200F.

Airbus made a last-minute decision to postpone an announcement of the A330-200 Freighter programme launch during the Farnborough air show despite receiving a commitment for 30 aircraft from an undisclosed customer.
Although Airbus declines to confirm that it cancelled the announcement, or explain its reasoning, a statement that briefly appeared on the Airbus website said "an undisclosed customer specialising in leasing freighters worldwide" had signed a letter of intent for 30 A330-200Fs, which is "subject to approval by the customer's board of directors". The statement added that first deliveries "are planned for the fourth quarter of 2009".
According to industry sources, European leasing company AerCap had been working with new Kuwaiti freight operator LoadAir to finalise an A330-200F order for announcement during Farnborough. AerCap declines to comment on any plan to acquire A330 freighters, but LoadAir confirms it is interested in taking an initial batch of four A330-200Fs for a medium-haul operation to supplement the long-haul routes it plans to serve with its new Boeing 747-400ERFs.
According to sources, other potential customers for the 64t- payload A330-200F include lessor Guggenheim Aviation Partners as well as Cathay Pacific, Etihad Airways and Emirates Airline. FedEx Express is also interested in the aircraft, but the carrier is understood to favour a freighter based on the larger A330-300.
The A330-200F will have a 64t payload, a range of 7,400km (4,000nm) and will typically accommodate up to 22 standard 96 x 125in (243 x 318cm) pallets. Airbus forecasts a market in the A330-200F's category for 380 aircraft over the next 20 years.
 
I've heard rumors that UPS management is looking at dropping the A380 in exchange for A300s (like the original order) or maybe some A330Fs...
 
Why????

Is Airbus considering keeping the A-300 line open then? If not, I'm sure Airbus will loose some orders to the 777F.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but that doesn't make sense to me. The A300/310 is a competitor to the 767-200/300 not the 777. The 777 is a larger aircraft, whose main competition for freight right now would seem to be the DC-10 and the MD-11. The 777F would add to that competition. The A330F is based on the A330-200, basically a shortened fuselage with an A330-300 wing. It follows then, that the A330F is more of an A300/767 replacement than a 777F competitor. It basically solves the problems of those a/c: it has the standard container size and volume of the A300 and the range of the 767. For Airbus to compete with the 777F, they would have to find a way to mate the fuselage of the A330-300HGW with the wing of the A340-600 and some 777 or A380 engine technology. Given all of their recent issues, don't see that happening it's easier to make modifications to an existing a/c and fit a niche that Boeing doesn't presently have a new a/c in.
