Just got this from a 20 year buddy who is 10+ with FEDEX :

"fedex has just announced that they have discontinued interviewing and
will stop hiring after 2002._ don't know how long this will last, as we
are still several hundred behind where we know we should be with
pilots._ and we're losing lots to retirement all the time - the whole
thing makes little sense !!_ sorry to send that bad news along, but
you've probably heard it already."

Actually I had not heard it already, but now that I have, I think I'll head to the fridge for a cold one...

Haven't heard that one

I'm at FedEx and I haven't read or heard anything about this. It's true we're done hiring for 02. The last class for Sept and both classes for Oct. were cancelled. However, all the company memo's I've read say we're going to resume hiring in 03. I've read numbers as low as 100 and as high as 250.I find it hard to believe that we're done hiring for the long haul. FedEx is going to be experiencing a ton of retirements and, I believe, must hire. I could be wrong (usually am) but I'd place this one under rumor and nothing more. Good luck you you........

This is old News. Right now we are short of pilots overall. However we have plenty of 727 FEs. Fedex is a very fiscally conservative. They see no reason to hire and pay more 727 FEs so they can sit on their buts. Upgrade training is lagging, so until they can get "the pig through the python" there is no reason to hire. There are eighty plus people in the pool right now and as of last week they were still interviewing for the pool. Typicaly Fedex has stopped hiring for peek months (Nov/Dec). Expect to see classes after the new year.

went in to see the chief pilot last week to drop off a resume for a buddy, and what he said is "not calling anyone for interviews for the rest of this year, expect to start calling again in mid-Jan. The financial guys say were going to hire 100 next year, while John Ryder(head of pilot hiring) says were going to hire 250, and my guess would be somewhere in between." Not great news, but not horrible either. Keep your head above water for those in the pool, its worth it!

More good info (not!)

Other tidbits of good info I've heard from 10+ year guys at Fedex (or maybe you could say "BS I've heard from guys that don't really know what they're talking about"):

- We are buying Polar

- We are buying Atlas

- We are buying UPS (one of my personal favorites)

- We will have 7000 pilots by 2007

- Our next contract payrates will top Delta (right)

- We are going to dry lease Polar's 747-400s for the international mail contract (Fedex pilots fly their planes)

Not to mention a million other ridiculous things you hear wandering around the AOC at 0100. The point is, "don't believe it until you see it on the line" and don't let your spirits get crushed over nonsense. You could fill pages and pages on this forum with the stuff guys make up or twist into what they want to hear.

Things will turn soon. Good luck.
