Pilotyip is taking a break from the college degree banter for a while. I gave it up until after Easter.

Easter? Hmmm.... wasn't that supposed to be Lent? Oh nevermind... who cares, order me another beer...

Good thing he doesn't want to fly for FedEx.

True. Also, he REQUIRES a college degree of most people who work FOR HIM!!!!

Every few years, the enlisted corps in the Air Force brings this fatally flawed argument up as well. "Why can't enlisted people fly jets? Why do you need a Bachelor's degree to be an officer?" This is very much the same argument you are making.

I have an analogy (college word) that may help you. Say you have two pilots, one has 500 hours and the other one has 3,000 hours. Is the 3,000 hour pilot always going to be the better pilot? The one who makes all the right decisions? The one with the golden hands? No, but in the aggregate ('nother college word), the group of pilots who have 3,000 hours are better pilots that the group at 500 hours.

The same applies to those with and without college degrees. The aggregate group of those with a college degree is generally more intelligent, more well rounded, and better prepared for life. I'm sorry it's a fact.

Hmm, "analogy" and "aggregate". I've been quite familiar with those words since my secondary school education, something to be said for the state of undergraduate education in the U.S.!

Then I'm sure your mother is quite proud of your vocabulary and rather disappointed you never went to college.

dude why do you automatically assume that people didn't go to college?

I'll just assume that with military time you have no concept what CRM is.

Best not to assume things isn't it?

and webmaster you want to turn off the add refresh button my webpage is having a meltdown.

Very very true, yet again, very undude like.

The dude's analogy doesn't really apply. You have to compare apples to apples.

If the enlisted guys had the same flight training do you really think a college degree is going to make a difference. Lets say you take a officer right out of ROTC and a Enlisted guy off the street. Make them do the exact same thing and they both pass all the tests how would having a college degree make the pilots different.

If they pass all the tests and do all that cool military stuff then what makes the officer different than an enlisted pilot? The degree? They passed all the same tests. The army has learned this lesson and made the warrant officer.

Enlisted are seen as the blue collar worker of the military. Hey somebody needs to dig a ditch and clean the toilet but given training, and passing the training in the end there is no difference. Just a degree in keg stands.

yes you can pick apart my grammar and spelling but it still doesn't answer the question. ER is on.

Based on this post, it is clear that nothing anyone says will make you understand. Just remember that a lot of stock is placed in a college degree by the most successful companies in the world. That alone should be enough.

That's it? I would have expected more.

you must have not done to well in debate class.

That's all the energy I have left for this subject................The Dude is out.

Thank you for all the responses on the subject. Most airlines list the degree as "preferred". First time I've seen this listed as required so I was quite surprised and wanted to ask the fellas here.

I guess I'll go and cross FedEx from the list.

Don't forget Capt Mark, there ia an elemeent of luck involved in this process and you were lucky to get hired at Fed Ex two years out fo college.

stop following me on this board...if i didn't have the degree all the luck in the world would not have helped...no go preflight your little falcon...

Captain mark what is it with the attitude? You're not really like that in real life are you?

Tell that to Sam Walton and Bill Gates.

Sam Walton and Bill Gates are the exception.

Here's a story---- back in the 1970's my uncle was in bad car accident that he survived- because he wasn't wearing his seatbelt. (Lots of people didn't wear them then and a lot didn't have shoulder straps.) But that was a fluke- in most accidents, you are better off with the seatbelt on.

Kinda like a college degree- not having one doesn't mean you aren't smart, and can't be successful and happy. But having one is more likely to add towards your success.

And as I said before.... if you have kids, don't you want to finish that degree??

Hey Capt Mark, back in those days, I don't believe a college degree was show stopper at FedEx, in 1978 I had a reserve budddy flying DA-20's for them and he was an ex-NavCad, read no college degree. I also see your post is below miine, doesn't that show you are following me around the board? BTW I will go back and fly a real mans airplanes the B-17, the C-47 and the mighty DA-20. That is real flying none of this programing and auto land. Best of luck your next FMS error message.

I agree. You can be smart, successful and happy without a degree but the numbers don't lie. You greatly improve your chances for financial success by having a degree. Somebody suggested that the most successful companies wanted college grads and I was just making the point that two of the most successful companies on earth were founded by folks that didn't graduate college.

FedEx can choose any standards they want for hiring purposes. It's a free country.

You have a Master's Degree and you think 100K is a good salary?

sure do, why shouldn't I?

Why I think $100k is not much of an annual salary:

Yip, my friend ... it's 2006, not 1976 ... for starters ... $55k for a family of 4 in CA makes you eligible for state government assistance. With median home prices nearing $700k in many desirable places, a $100k income locks you into some nasty neighborhoods and underperforming school districts.

If you want a choice between surfing and skiing on your days off (is there anything else in life worth pursuing? :D ) then you'll require more than $100k a year.

College nowadays is $40k per year at many private universities and it's tough to buy a decent new vehicle for less than $25k.

On the other hand, I'm sure $100k stretches quite a bit further in much less desirable places to live (statistically speaking) such as Ypsilanti ;)

If you're going to compete for housing/school districts/quality of life enhancements anywhere near a coast, sorry to break the news, but $100k will leave you on the outside looking in.

I say choke every last dollar out of management because you're worth it! :D Fly ... because it beats digging ditches!

It's not an economics degree.
