My airline is now a CASS participant and I'm looking for info as to how difficult it is for an off-line guy to commute to DEN via IND or MEM--starting from GSO.

Having read the FDX CASS requirements on another thread, I'm going to assume (for now) that we meet all of the criteria listed, specifically the electronic photo ID in the system.

Some of my trips return to domicile at around 9pm and instead of waiting for the next day's flights (doing the two leg commute), I'd like to take advantage of the opportunity to get out ASAP.

Many thanks.

offline

Offline CASS guys have no problem jumpseating on FedEx. You can call and reserve a seat. However, with your times and city pairs, I don't think jumpseating on us will help you out much. You will have to ride from GSO to most likely MEM. Get there around midnight to 0100. Hang out for 2-3 hours and then fly from MEM to DEN and get there around sunrise or so. I have not looked at the specific schedules, but that will be pretty close.

If I were you, get some sleep and then fly out the next day.

Goose17,

Those were the times I was expecting, having seen that jumpseat finder page. However, DEN on the pax airlines, especially this coming overbooked summer, is getting more and more difficult each year (This will be the 3rd summer I've been doing this) and I'm trying to ease the commuting stress as much as possible. I was just curious if there's a decent contigent of FDX guys commuting to/from here, thereby bumping the offline guys.

I would prefer to go through IND as I'm originally from there (even worked the ramp at the hub in the mid to late 90s. I remember the nights when we would get a grand total of TWO widebodies for the sort.) and getting bumped wouldn't be that much of a hassle.

I have family in the Denver area and can say with certainty that the Mem-Den, Den-Mem flight is getting pretty full.

I don't know about indy.....

What I can say about Indy...is that if I had to choose I would almost always choose Indy....

I have heard rumors that there are around 200 guys from FedEx living in the Denver area.

Just a heads up... I think we have around 250 Fedex pilots living in the Denver area that you might have to compete with for Fedex jumseats. I was in Denver a few weeks ago for a vacation- I couldn't get out of MEM on Fedex, though I had booked a jumpseat in advance. I ended up on Skywest- on the jumpseat. And getting back? Took me 2 days and I ended up on a Skywest flight again. Last one on. Sat up front.

depends on when

While it is true there are a lot of guys in Denver. I'm sure it is somewhat similar to DFW - where I commute from. If you are trying to go on Sun, Mon, or Fri, you might have a much harder time than say Tues, Wed, Thurs, or Sat. Also, more food for thougth; the "bookable" jumpseats for you are those in the back. We also have a couple seats up front that are available with Captain's permission. Even if you are told it is a full flight, check with the ramp the day of the flight.

Wrong direction from GSO but Southwwest may help your situation.

As a native of GSO, now residing in MEM, I trully understand your pain. Thought this info may help. Since SWA now operates out of DEN, RDU is not a bad choice as long as you are not trying to get to RDU in the late afternoon. I have jumpseated on SWA several times with out any problems, particularly in and out HOU during spring break. The SWA Non-Rev number is 866.359.7967 (a person) or 866.792.7529 (automated).
