A colleague of mine is interested in finding a good flight school/FBO near Chapel Hill, NC. He has a Private and might want to work on an instrument and/or just rent for fun. Any ideas ?

Thank you,

The Chapel Hill Flying Club is actually in Sanford, which is bit of haul down 15-501. There is a club in Durham (they're in the yellow pages) which is very close-knit, I just can't recall the name right now. They have a fly-in once per month and everyone I've met from there was VERY friendly and easy-going (as you probably know ... this ain't always the case with flight schools). I will look up the info if you want.

There is also Southern Jet at RDU which is now run by Margeret Riddle, who's been around the local flying scene since Jesus was a baby. She's a little 'stern' but is a wonderful instrument instructor.

There's alot of GA in the area ... PM if you need specifics.

Empire Aviation at Lake Ridge airpark in Durham is one of the cheaper flight schools around. I did a little part time instructing there when I was doing some corporate flying out of RDU. If you want to fly out of RDU I would suggest southern jet. I believe they have 152, 172, and new skyhawks. Here is the link to empire aviation website. www.empire-aviation.com

I can't say enough good things about the Chapel Hill Flying Club, now known as The Wings Of Carolina Flying Club. http://www.wingsofcarolina.org/

I spent 4 years in Durham at school and a large majority of that was at the CHFC at IGX in CH. Excellent group of people and while they had a run of bad luck the past few years, they are doing quite well right now. Take a look at their web site!
