I've tried 3 different publisher's versions of the FAR/AIM. My favorite is the Jeppeson, due to its large size. However its almost too large to take with you. The ASA is cramped and you have to break the back just to read it!

When you refer to the JEPP FAR/AIM, are you talking about their book, or the binder FAR/AIM they offer?

The Jeppesen Book

Jeppesen publishes a bound copy of the FAR/AIM once a year, new one comes out Oct 19th I think. Free updates at Jeppesen.com, (not that I check them, the only person whose ever asked about them is an FAA examiner who didn't bust anybody for it)
Its the best I've seen so far because its large enough to lay flat as you look for something. Unfortunately its also a beast to lug around, se we keep a copy at the flight school. The ASA version is kinda cramped. I've also tried one other publisher, Times Weekly or something like that, a size inbetween the Jepp and ASA versions, it was pretty good.

I use the Aviation Week FAR/AIM 2003, and picked one up this past week at a Barnes and Noble in Chandler AZ

It includes the new security rules for GA, and Reg 1544, the 12.5 rule, and fits laying on the top in my flight bag.

asa far aim version ends 10/31. look in a few pages, that's where the info is. as far as changes, i heard that 2003 (now in effect) requires you to have a picture ID along with your cert and med...like a dl or passport.

I had a friend get asked on his II checkride how he could tell his ASA AIM was current. He couldn't find it at the time, but that's in the same place. From the looks of it, it's "ineffective upon receipt." The picture ID regulation was put into effect about a week ago. It amends 61.3 to require a valid photo ID, which typically will be a driver's license, but could also be an ID card which allows unescorted access to an airport SIDA.

As said before, your most current source is going to be the web. The Electronic Code of Federal Regulations. Links from the FAA website among others. Next most current source is going to be a subscription service like Jeppesen. The ASA version is handy and good for studying and reference, but will have currency lapses potentially immediately on publication. The ASA version 2003 I believe has current info through early September 2002 and printed late September (basing this from my 2001 copy). They will provide a mid year update for free if you fill out the back page.

I have a Jepp FAR/AIM subscription as well. Binder form. Updates normally amount to a page or two here and there. It is a pain to re-highlight updated pages, but it's not all that bad. And it's certainly a lot easier than replacing an entire bound book on a yearly basis!

Do you have a direct link for the price and information on the subscription service?
I've been searching Jeppesen's site for 30 minutes, and only see the BOOK FAR/AIM offered.
