Hey Guys,

Need some help - a friend of mine works for a guy who is trying to hold him to a $10K training agreement for an SIC type for the Falcon 10.

My question is, how much does a full type cost? Where could he go to get it?

Thanks in advance.

A type is not required for an Sic until June and only internationally at that. Tell us more. Is he about to get hired or is he about to quit? An SIC type is just about worthless in terms of what it lets your do. If he already has an "SIC" type, he'll have to go to school ang get typed out of a recurrent. From the sound of the guy he works for, he probably went to Simuflite because it is cheaper (training is just fine there). If by chance he went to FSI and has a full service contract, he should sneak back to FSi and do a type through recurrent, which would cost the operator nothing, provided he has a full service initial contract and it has not expired. If he plays his cards right, the opeator wont even know about it until it's too late.

Tell us more about the situation.

It sounds like your friend signed the training agreement, got the SIC type, and now wants to leave? So the employer wants his $10K back? If so, I would say that your friend owes him $10K. If you sign a contract it can be enforced.

He hasn't signed yet. He has quite a bit of Falcon 10 SIC time, but insurance req's and the employer's inability to keep FOs have meant that they are now sending all FOs to simuflight to get an SIC type. I told him to research what the full type would cost, as I have a feeling it's cheaper than $10K, then sign only if he gets the full type. The guy he works for is just trying to hold on to people, but doesn't realize that you could hold on to them if you treated them right.
How much do you think it would cost (simuflight doesn't want to give prices out to individuals, besides they have been dealing with this one operator for years)?

An SIC type is just a regular recurrent with some extra paperwork. If he has been to any type of formal training in the past 12 months, he can get a copy of his training records and go down to the FSDO and they will will issue him that SIC type; that's how meaningless it is. With that said, he needs to go and get PIC typed. If the guy wont type him then he should tell that guy to go take a hike. Lots of these loser CPs with small departments wont type anyone so that nobody will be able to take his job when the boss sees what a putz he is. I'd go for the full type. That's just the cost of doing business.

If he's going to an "SIC Initial" then I would think the $10k range would not be far off, and would not include expenses.

If it's a recurrent, I would guess in the $6k range.

In either case, getting the full type wouldn't be much more, and would be the smart way to go.

I spoke to a guy who just paid around $25K for a Falcon 50 type rating at FSI TEB. Have your buddy call Simuflight and ask what the rate is. Talk to the sales manager and ask him what his last minute drop in price is for an independent contract pilot paying out of his own pocket (it's better to do this in person, if you can)
