I flew with this guy that had more stories then Stephen King. He was an F-14 pilot and was shot down twice over iraq in the original war, was a helicopter pilot that was involved in the Somalia disaster, as well as other helo crashes, was in the CIA and stole King Airs from Mexico (he couldn't elaborate on the details, top secret stuff.) Blew up mountains in Columbia, still dont know why. Flew 747's for 5 years at Southern Air but had to "retire" because of some top secret CIA mission. The list goes on. Of course I didn't believe a single story, but it was all this guy had. 40-something, single, living with Mom, no car, no phone, doofy, etc. He was also "best" friends with the CP for JetBlue but couldn't get an interview because he didnt have 1000 hrs jet time. Wait?? Didnt you fly F-14's and 747's?? Wasn't a very good pilot at all, icing on the cake!!

I was flying a trip (civilian trip) in to Pax River last summer and so I asked the FNG that we had just hired that I was flying with if he had ever been into Pax before during our pre-departure breif. "Sure, many times", was his reply. Well, since I had been there many times myself I was ready for the PAR as the field was IFR and that's all those crazy Marines use at Pax for a precision approach. No biggy really, except that I also program a nice LNAV/VNAV approach into my FMS as well. So we get cleared for the PAR and this winner hits "direct to" on the FMS and delets my nice approach that I had just set up. Long story short, I give him a good butt chewing on the ground only to find out that his definition of "having been to Pax a bunch of times" was from when he was in the Navy, but get this, he was never a pilot but was on a Sub crew! Nice.

He lasted two-months with us. Two-months too long really.

I knew a dork in college who claimed to be a Navy reserve EA-6B nfo.

When I asked why he didn't go to drill he claimed that he only went once a year for two weeks to do all his flying. He said he was a LT but the rank he showed me was for a Cmdr. He claimed that reservists used a different rank structure and insignia. I actually found his lies creative and funny.

Albie!! Who cares is really about all I got from his diatribe about the FMS. Thank god for airplanes where talking about the autopilot is a shot of weed in the bar and you've always got 5 stages when you need it...

While the 727 is no Eagle, it demands to be flown and there ain't no pretty glass boxes on ours. If I could hold captain I'd probably stick with it for another 5 years. Alas...if I can't...I'll slide over to the French jet and have learn all these "funny words" I see whenever I see pilots sharing techniques.

Just got back from lovely 48 hours in AK on my own time. If I was 8 years younger and 2 back surgeries less expereinced--I'd have my total force App in place for those things up there already. Hope you are having a ball...

Military posers are very easy to spot.

The worst are prior enlisted folks who somehow feel inadequate. I knew of a guy who told everyone how he flew C-5's in the AF. True, but he never mentioned he was an engineer.

I for one was always proud of my prior enlisted status. How many shoe-clerk SSgt's are flying for legacy carriers anyway?

I can't tell you...

...is the dead give away for a poser, especially with regards to the Special Operations World. When you meet someone, and they CONSISTENTLY keep dropping the whole, "I can't tell you..." bit, then that should raise the red flags.

Granted, even if you are legit, there are times when someone asks you a pointed question that you simply have to respond, "I hate to sound like "that guy", but I can't discuss that particular ________ " And in reality, if someone was legit, and continually talks about what they "can't talk about", then that is a personality defect, because it's never too hard to guide a discussion in a direction that keeps you from having to say stuff like that. I too have caught quite a few dudes lying about not only their "military pilot lives", but also the guys who claimed to be "special forces"...caught a guy pouring it on real thick to a bunch of ladies one time, but I didn't call him out...he looked like he could use all the help he could get...I just smiled and walked away. I figure kharma will catch up with him.

Hey CHL! I had to laugh about your story going into Pax River. Navy test pilot school is there, not too many Marines except those in TPS.
I can appreciate the FMS debacle (flying MD-11's now), and just put 100 ft over the aproach end in to back up PAR's. Your #2 didn't have a clue!
I flew a Convair 880 conversion to a tanker at Pax for 8 years. Great place. Still live 14 miles upriver.
I've seen navigators logging their time as pilot time and others lying out of their teeth.
I flew EP-3 "spook" missions in the Navy and never once told anyone "I can't talk about that."
I just didn't talk about that stuff.

Kelly trains a mix of active duty pilots, Guard and Reserve even though they are an ANG squadron. The mix of Active/Guard/Reserve at Luke and Kelly are similar. Tucson mostly trains pilots of other countries that purchased F-16s. The majority of Guard/Reserve pilots are trained at Luke, since that is the largest training base.

Also add McConnell to the list of former FTU bases along MacDill and Hill which were added earlier.
