Failed Musician?

Hi folks, my first thread on this forum!

I am also amazed at how many pilots are or were musicians.

I am a trombone (also play baritone horn, tuba and trumpet) player, and even got a scholarship to Hofstra University with it. I played on a semi professional basis around Long Island, back in the early to mid '80's, right up until I got my first real commuter job, and that was more or less the end of my music career! Music was and is fun, but my lifelong dream was always to become a pilot. FWIW, I made the right choice.

I've started teaching myself guitar in the last year, and I love it. I harbor NO illusions of becoming a rock star (well, my wife, kids and neighbors might disagree........ the volume is there, if not the ability!) but it's lots of fun!

Yes, I must admit that I am a John Entwistle wannabe.

I am a bit of a Pete Townshend wannabe (the music part.....I can do without the drug/drinking problems, not to mention the other recent stuff! I think I could deal with the groupies though!). I've recently gotten a Gibson Pete Townshend Signature SG. What a wonderful axe! I've almost got Young Man Blues and Won't Get Fooled Again down.....

I've been playing guitar since grade school. I saw a Dokken concert back then and George Lynch just blew me away. I thought, I have to learn to play like him. My musical taste changed since then (was in several hardcore/metal bands) but I still play. Never really wanted to become pro but it was still fun. I've owned several guitars but really like ESP and my old KRAMER when they were still built in the US. Would love to get back in a band again just to jam but trying to align everyone's schedule is almost impossible. Ahh, the good old days!

I played keyboards in a ska band in the late 1980's. Went on tour, opened for Fishbone, Ziggy Marley, Ramones. Headlined CBGB's a few times (good times!) Also put out 2 albums on an independant label. Then I realized I was just distracting myself from my childhood dream of flying. Said goodbye to the groupies, finished college and went to flight school.

Great thread! I was in a band for years with another guy on this board. We had a record deal, toured everywhere from Alaska to Florida, Europe even Russia. But ,alas, 5 years and no hit single means I had to find another career. Used my last royalty payment to help pay for flying lessons. It's great flying around the country and seeing all the venues we used to play.
