It seems that most pilots I meet play some kind of instrument, and either wanted to be, or where in a band at one point. With the exception of the skin flute, radio, etc., just curious as to how many pilots out there are failed musicians..?

I know a few flight attendants that play a mean skin flute...

Yes, I must admit that I am a John Entwistle wannabe. Have been in several bands over the years, will probably be in several more. Just remember.......... If its too loud, your too old.

Liberace was great at the piano, but really sucked at the organ.

I was, at one time--and in my own humble opinion--a very good concert trumpet player. Had a kickass college scholarship thanks to my rendition of the show-piece Bride of the Waves.

But ultimately, flying seemed like more fun. I haven't played in quite some time...I should probably pick it up again.

My brother was a superb musician, far better than me. Drums, keyboards...even wrote some of his own stuff. He threw that away to fly Saabs.

(What is this, Music Week? Three music-related threads in as many days... :D )

:D Danm, but that's funny.

Is one of them named Steve?? :p

No, I think his name was Flip Conroy....:D

Well, I'll never admit to being a failed musician, but I did major in music in college. I was a classical musician for several years, and played in several orchestras. I had to choose between my flying career and my music career once I started working at American Eagle. I was just too junior at Eagle to bid a schedule that would allow me to accept engagements. I ended up turning so much work down that eventually I wasn't the first call anymore. It was a bummer.

My first coupla years of college were spent playing trombone as much as possible and studying as little as possible. That plan just didn't seem to work in the long run for some reason...

I play guitar (classical, jazz, rock&roll), banjo (bluegrass, of course), piano, and some drums (can't find room in the house).

I've been fortunate enough to play at some colleges and churches (not the chicken outfit), write some songs, and even proposed to my wife with a song.

I usually carry a Baby Taylor with me on the road ("No, it's not a tennis racket...").

Anyone else travel with a guitar?

"Every musician gets a girl, but a guitarist gets his pick!"

D'you know why drummers leave their sticks on the dashboards of their cars?

So they can park in the handicapped spots... :D

I played guitar in a band during my Dayton Beach days. We played a lot at Point Break in DAB. I still play for fun and like collecting guitars and such. Nothing ever came of it, nor did I expect it to.........but dam$ was it good for my social life.

I wasn't even that good, but played for a good band.......Wild Pork!

It's funny.......when I was furlouged for the third time.....my mother said to me.........."what about your music?" I laughed out loud!!!

God bless mothers.

NYR
ESP, Fender, Ibanez (want to have PRS and Peavey Wolfgang)
Mesa Boogie amps (tubes of course) and various Digetech effects processors (to cover my mistakes).;)

Hugh,

Nah, I was too snobby to go to band camp. I went to orchestra camp...:p

I myself used to play guitar for a living as a studio musician, and for a certain female teeny bopper pop star I would rather not mention as I would like to come back to this web site one day! I must admit, it was all a great experience, but I gave up the professional musician gig to fly..?? It seems I am always running into another pilot that wants to "jam"....or drink,..or both.
Man, it's nice to fit in!

Well, look at this bunch.whadda ya know ? You know the really sad thing to me is,you can't hardly get American made guitars anymore.I decided to go to Guitar Center last week and everything seems made in Korea,China or Indonesia-no wonder vintage axe prices are off the scale.I played a bunch of them, but the quality just didn't impress me.I'm prolly niave about this stuff, but I haven't kept up in years.I did get a nice Yamaha acoustic (used-SJ180) for $99 bucks that sounded to my tin ear to be almost as good as the $2000+ model Taylors.I reckon I'll hafta save my nickles for a decent Gibson Firebird or '76 Explorer. For the record:

1982 Peavey T-60 (one of the first)

1975 Fender Mustang (It's mint-I bought it from Skynyrd drummer Artimus Pyle in 1985-Arctic White with the cheesy Fender tremolo on the original case with red fuzz inside)

1980's Yamaha SJ180 Acoustic

Zoom 501 (or some such) "talent box"

Ancient (1983 or so) Scholz Rockman

Peavey Bandit -good little amp !

Early 80's vintage MXR Distortion + (from the "punctured muffler" sound to "icepick in the forehead" with the turn of a knob)

I played the skin flute as well but I was always a beat off...

I took music history classes in college as electives.
Had an oppertunity to play trumpet at Mich. State Univerisity's marching band but passed it up in order to go to a school where they had something I was interested in as far as a major goes.

I still play the piano for recreation, my next song I want to master is Van Halen's "Right Now".

Failed musician here. But then again ... I failed at piloting too, and will be able to collect Social Security by the time I get to a 135 freight outfit. :D

(My claim to fame? I once opened for Pat Travers. Anyone know who he is? I didn't think so. )
