Is there any truth to the rumor that airlines won't hire guys with mustaches, or goatees? I have a goatee, and have an interview soon and wonder wether I should shave it, or keep it. Any ideas?

How often do you see pilots with goatees or excessive facial hair? This should be common sense.

not true
it depends on where you go

a goatee, they won't like that, you should take that off

if you have a vandyke, take the bottom of to leave;

a moustache is ok if they're trimmed and neat

theres an unfortunate bias towards excess facial hair on pilots, but thats an entirely different thread (on that i think has already been beat to death)

Despite whether or not an airline allows facial hair "British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Saudia, Kuwait, KLM, Air Jamaica," It's not smart to interview with facial hair no matter who the company is. Not even a moustache, believe me.

well since this is the regionals section, i hardly doubt he's interviewing at any of those places...

i interviewed at a regional with a moustache (a sweet 70's kinda thin porn 'stache), and no suit(just pants, shirt, tie) with the chief pilot who's a stickler for the rules/book, i was the talk of the interview class apparently(the other prospective guys that is).

and yet i still got the job
(and no it wasn't mesa or anyone like that)

but your results may vary

Someone needs to reassess his priorities.

Commuting on JB one month, 3 out of the 4 CA's had goats. Commuting on DAL a Lufthansa CA DH'ing in front of me, full beard.

Unless you're a wuss with a capital 'P,' why not shave it until you see what is acceptable after you're hired? How long does it take to grow back? Mine takes four days. Big friggin' woop.

With all the things you cannot control in an interview, why have even chance ONE thing that could be construed as a negative?

hey, kind of a related note. i am clean shaven, but i have sideburns that are even with the bottoms of my earlobes. they're not really wide or angled at the bottom or anything, i've just had them since i was 15. i have no tats, no piercings, nothing like that, and i have short hair. would the 'burns be a problem at an interview?

lol a goatee is what dobie gillis had, whiskers just on the chin, a vandyke is when it connects to the moustache (also called a 'circular beard')
Technically either would be classified as a “mangina”.

At most regionals they wouldn't be allowed by the ops specs, I know at ASA it's no more than 1/2 way down the ear.

I don't really know if the interviewers would have a problem with it, but if you want the job, why risk it? Besides, if you GET the job, chances are you'll have to trim them anyway.

Leave it on!

Hey, at 750 hours, you'll look too cool for the airlines. I mean really, if you can't be your own person, why work there? You can look as unprofessional as you want as a flight instructor. Those students really aren't there to learn, they want to build you flight time so you can help race us all to the bottom. But I'm sure we all just have to get to that JET, right? Leave it on, let us know what happens.

BTW- Every so often I see a post that irritates me. I guess the original post kind of made me lose my cool. Oh well. Anyway, best of luck to all this year keeping your jobs. I have a bad feeling this year will be as bad as 2,3, and 4 combined.

Hey Prop,

get a hold of yourself, seems to me you are on a spiraling dive and don't know what to do, go get some help, professional help....... thanks for the deep insight, and meaningful advice. At this point you're the only joker I hope to beat to the bottom.

BTW- Nobody cares if you are irritated or not....actually I guess I do so I can keep doing it. Beat it.
