The FAA has an opening for pilots and was wondering what its like? Are these jobs competive to get and are they career positions? And do you have to stay in Virginia or is there other locations?

Son,
There ain't no draft no more.

Salary Range: $76,547 to $118,648

Thats the salary range for the position. The ad says based in Virginia, and I don't think that the FAA has a commuter clause. Thats not chump change for someone with a CFI-MEI and first class medical.

If you can't live on a hundred grand a year, then maybe a career change is in order.

FAA has a G-4 or G-5 based in DC I think. US Coast Guard Gulfstream (formerly part of DOT) used to fly VIPs around

FAA Flight Inspection offices, the ones that check the navaids, have King Air 300's, Challengers, and Lear 60's. The OCCASIONALLY advertise on the FAA website. Prob competiive. Pay is GS-12 and/or GS-13 with is $55K to $85K (at upper end of GS-13).

Likely weekends and major holidays off, but those guys seem to be on road alot. One was in my recurrent class.

Back around 20 years ago, when I was asking about similar jobs, word I got was take their minimums, multiply by three, and if you served a tour with somebody in the office, you had a good shot.

In fact, I was told at one office I didn't stand a chance without prior military time. What A-4 time had to do with flying Kingairs in the States, was never explained to me....
