What type of inspections will the FAA perform at MX sites? Are they random such as ramp checks or do they perform regular inspections? Are they only checking that the paperwork is in order or do they inspect actual maintenance work?

Every had a colonoscopy? Wait I see from your picture that your ready for the FAA right now. If you ask nicely they might use some KY!

The friendlies conduct both types. They check everything, tool calibration dates, chemical, lubricants and paint expiration dates, out of date manuals and reference material, cure dates on spare parts in stores, completed paperwork for errors, shop proceedures, personnel authorizations ( RII, run/taxi, release, FAA certificates) on the premises, and spot inspections on the aircraft themselves after they are released from maintenance. I've seen them find things that are not on the service/routine task cards, and they're not bashful about writing those items up either.

They can look at anything thats addressed in your GMM, the FAR's, Advisory Circulars, etc.

A Part 145 base inspection is the same as a Part 135 or 121 base inspection...it's a check for conformity with the regulation. In any possible respect. Particularly with the operations manual and for the limitations and authorizations issued to the operation being inspected.

Have your shop in order and you will have no problems!

For the scheduled base inspections they use a checklist that is available from the FAA website. Ask them which checklists they are going to use, print them off and review them so you are not wasting your time preparing for the inspection . They are given a list of "R" (required) items that they have to inspect that year. But as skydivinguy says, have your shop in order.
