MY CP got a message from the FAA the other day asking who was in a certain airplane at a certain time. As it turns out, I was in the airplane at the time in question. All the message said was, "Who departed XYZ airport in N12345 at this time, and departed to the north?" I was in the airplane at the time, however I was 50 miles south of the airport, and I hadn't turned north the entire flight. I was in contact with all control towers and our local approach control as well, so it couldn't be an airspace violation. I filed and activated a flight plan. I got a weather breifing including all NOTAMS and there were no TFR's or anything significant. I was at safe altitudes the entire flight, and nothing out of the ordinary happened. The only possible reason (that I can think of) the FAA called could be because I was monitoring 121.5 to demonstrate to my student, and I happened to hear an ELT. I told the nearsest tower about it and they said that they knew about it and where it was. I can't think of what I could have done to have the FAA call about me. It has been less that 10 days so I can fill out a NASA form, but what should it say? Nothing out of the ordinary happened. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you did nothing wrong call them. They put their pants on one leg at a time like most of us. They are not gods so why be afraid to call

I agree with wildbill. Give them a call and figure out what they're after. If they tell you that you screwed something up (which is possible with all of the TFRs that pop up these days, even if you did check them before the flight), then you may still have enough time to file an ASRS report.

It's funny how the FAA called and asked questions but didn't say why.

Good luck.

Just post in one place. You (and we) won't have a clue what is going on if you post the same thing in 8 different forums.

Thanks for the response. I called back today and it turns out that they got the wrong tail number. Much Ado about nothing I guess.
