I have a friend of mine that got a DUI and after all is said and done with; he received a letter from the FAA saying since he had a minor in consumption 10 years ago so they will need all the info from both cases to decide if he can keep his medical and doesn’t have a alcohol problem. I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this?

You friend will more than likely to be able to keep his medical, however he will be jumping through some major hoops to keep it.

Please be more specific. What does the above mean? Is this a prior DUI or what?

I too had a minor in consumption when I was in college!;)

The minor in consumption was that he had been caught drinking while underage. Not driving.

My question then is how did the FAA find out about this? This is not something that would be reported on the FAA medical questionair and it is not something that would be in a person's motor vehicle record. I think the only way this was a reportable event was if "your friend" was in rehab or something like that.

If "your friend" has intends on having a career in aviation, "your friend" should seek the consultation of an aviation attorney ASAP.

But let's be honest here, does the FAA expect pilots to be sober church goers? 1 DUI and a ticket as a minor sounds like bad luck more than anything, not a candidate for AA (not the airline). Let's face it, pilots are sailors of the sky; I have never met a good one who doesn't drink.
