Quite to the contrary. You can in fact change tires all day long, but you need to explain to the FIA why you did so. If they don't like your explanation, you will be DQ'd.

If Kimi had changed the damaged tire, he most certainly would've been penalized... I personally think it was a poor decision to leave him out with such an obvious problem with the tire, because what ended up happening seemed inevitable and it was clearly unsafe.

Yeah, I agree the tire rule is rather silly. In the scheme of things, I don't see how this will make things cheaper. As we saw in this race, it may even make things unsafe, regardless of the FIA's allowance for damaged tire changes. At least the tether did its job.

It was interesting to see Kimi let his "ice man" style down at such a crucial point. I recall Mika doing this a few times too in the past. Those Finn's are cool characters, but they have their moments.

So when are we starting the Flightinfo.com F1 message board??
