F-4 Phantoms in service

I was at the Van Nuys, Ca. airport Monday morning to watch the departing warbirds from this weekend's past airshow, and was treated to seeing two F-4 Phantoms on a dual takeoff.

Outside of the QF-4s at Pt Mugu, I thought we had retired the airplane pretty much (Certainly this is not a complaint, I love this airplane!). The two I saw appeared to have National Guard colors on them. Is the ANG still using them? I only know of one privately owned F-4 (Collings Foundation).

The German Air Force is still training with F-4F's here in the States...if I'm not terribly mistaken.

Correct, Germans train at Holloman AFB, NM.

There are also some QF-4s at Mojave Airport which get used at Edwards for various tests ( Like Raptor firing tests, etc.). The other day I was working as a tower SOF at Edwards and had the pleasure to see a rare aerial event. I had a front row seat to watch an F/A-22, F-15, and F-4 all airborne together! I just wish I had a camera to capture the event....oh well.

Yeah I forgot about the Mojave Phantoms. I toured the airport last summer and took some nice static shots while there.

I got an email today from somebody involved with the Van Nuys airshow, and they told me the Phantoms there, were from Holloman AFB......

There are also QF-4's at Tyndal AFB, Panama City Fl

QF-4's are used as targets for live missile shots out in the desert. they are actually remote controlled after someone taxi's them to the runway. Kind of sad fate for an old war fighter. I wonder when they will start using Tomcats for the same thing....

One of my friends in the AF still gets to fly them at Tucson for check flights as they are bring brought out of the boneyard, before being converted to drones

What is the squadron in Panama City that still flys F-4s ? I am flying there next week, and would like to take some pics.
