Oaktown, May 17 - Two military F-16 fighter jets collided Monday in southwestern Indiana, Indiana State Police said. An eyewitness says that a military pilot was killed, but no deaths or injuries were immediately confirmed.

Sgt. Greg Winkler said the jets collided about 1:40 p.m. over Oaktown, about 40 miles south of Terre Haute. He said he believed the wreckage landed in an open field.

The planes are out of the 181st Fighter Wing based in Terre Haute. They were on a training exercise.

A Knox County emergency services, who not give his name, said the county coroner had been sent to the scene, but would not confirm any fatalities.

Don Kirkham, a former Knox County sheriff, said he was mowing his lawn when he heard a boom or explosion and then looked up to see a man parachuting down. He said he drove to that area and found two other people comforting the pilot, who was agitated and had head wounds.

"He's OK. He's bleeding from facial wounds," Kirkham said.

"All he was concerned about was his buddy. He said `I'm not worried about anything but my buddy,' so we cornered him and got him into an ambulance," Kirkham said.

Karla Caballero, manager of Da Bar & Grill in Oaktown, said she was talking on the phone to her mother when she heard what she assumed was a sonic boom.

About 15 minutes later, she said a man came into the bar and said he saw a pilot parachute down along nearby U.S. 41 who said he spoke to the pilot, who appeared fine.

"This man said the pilot was OK," Caballero said.

She said other people said they saw smoke coming from an area about six to eight miles south of the rural town of about 800 people.

Death of one of the pilots has apparently been confirmed by the Governor's office.

Heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of the pilot, as well as the entire 181st.

I have many friends that are apart of that fighter wing so please keep them in your thoughts.

It's a da%@ shame. I fly out of, and I'm from Terre Haute in Indiana State's program. What a sad day. I was listening to that exact flight on my radio scanner in my bedroom before the incident. I'm not a military guy (although still thinking about it), but I feel the sorrow. Apparently, the chute didn't open, but a midair collision is what caused it. He, his family, and all the Racers will be in my prayers.

When I was in AFROTC at ISU many eons ago, we were very close to the RACER squadron - this was back when they had F4s;

I can still remember playing an airfield aggressor (read - running around their base with an M16 acting like an attacker), during one of their workups to an Operational Readiness Inspection.

My deepest condolences

I just realized he lived less than a mile from my house. For some reason, reading "Indiana Guard" put up a mental block that resisted the nagging feeling that his name sounded familiar. His funeral is Saturday - I'll be there.

The news said it might have had something to do the the thunderstorms in the area at the time. I was flying through that area and could hear the center controller talking to the flight. I didn't pay much attention because we were at FL230 trying to pick our way through a line of some nasty storms. I even thought to snap a quick picture of the TB's. It was a nasty day.

Godspeed.
