Hello all,

I have been a longtime lurker and I finally have something to ask.
On another board, a question was raised about the time it takes for an F-14's wings to sweep. It was something I 've wondered about for some reason. The question wasn't answered so I thought I'd pose that here:

How long does it take for an F-14's wings to sweep?

It varies depending on load (g's), but maximum sweep rate is 15 deg/sec. So...going from 20deg to 68deg would be 3.2 seconds at the maximum rate ((68-20)/15).

Where in the world did that question come from? Bar bet?

People often confuse the F-14 to the F-15, twin tails and all. I couldn’t tell you how many people ask me at air shows if my plane is an F-14. Patmack18, you're referring to the F-15. Getting near an F-14 unfortunately is all too easy.

By who? Maybe the Navy has a super secret Stealth Hornet designated the F/A-118 that they put well in front of the Tomcat cap. Sounds like a pretty good tactic to me. Lets see, AWACS tells you about a Tomcat cap so you get your fangs out and go supersonic so just like Maverick, so you can get there in 30 seconds. Just as you start getting contacts, BAMMM!!!! An F/A-118 has just hit you with their new super secret smokeless AMRAAM that is powered by the same system found in the flying saucer crash at Roswell. Or maybe the Navy put in an acquisition order for the F-22 for the same tactic but demanded that it be re-designated the F/A-22. That change is about as gay as 2 men having "relations" (if you know what I mean) so the Navy has to be involved in some way, shape or form. Or maybe you are reffering to that SA-2 looking thing they strap on the bottom of the Tomcat. I think the first 2 are pretty good guesses at what you meant. If you meant the last one, you must live in a fantasy world. At any rate, times must be a changin'. I had no idea they were teaching fighter tactics to OCS candidates.
 
For the life of me, I never get tired of hearing pointy-nosed guys going at it. Although half the time I don't have the first clue as to what your talking about - it's still amusing.
PatMack - best of luck in OCS, but take Rush's advice: don't get in on the conversation unless you know what you are talking about. I think the other military flyers will agree with this (at least the Navy types): when you're going through flight school, don't make a point of telling your instructors things like, "I'm going to be a F/A-18 guy". The correct answer to, "So, ENS Mack, what are you hoping to fly?", is a very humble, "Whatever they'll let me, sir" or the always popular, "Uhhh, what did you fly, sir?"
Call it sucking up if you want to, but I saw more than one overly cocky SNA/SNFO get the proverbial boot upside his head for being a jackass.

Was Rush referring to the Phoenix missile that is flown exclusively on the F-14? If so, what are the chances that a Tomcat could engage a Viper 100 miles out with a Phoenix and be successful?

If anyone has any factual info on the Phoenix, I would be interested in hearing if the missile has any use in today's modern combat arena.
