Does anyone here know what's up with the gaggle of 10 F-105s parked in a tidy lineup at Lackland?

There are two pics of them posted at Airliners.net,

[/FONT] These pics are from 1992 and 1999, but I just looked at a recent satellite pic and the 105s are still there. One of the A.net shots mention that they're used for security training, but I just wonder if that's the real story...

Beautiful and sad all at the same time...

They probably look a lot nicer now than they did in service. One of the fastest planes the USAF ever had.

If you look closely you can see their wheels bolted to a bracket above the ground. They are completely stripped down (engines, avionics, etc) and are basically static displays.

It's kind of strange that SPs would need a row of fighters to train. I'm kind of curious what they do with them.

Years back, while flying at Randolph, we'd overfly a dirt strip on Camp Bullis that had and F-105, F-101, and F-106 sitting on it. Obviously some sort of training setup, but I never got the full story. Neat to look at, though.

The mighty Herc, of course.

Maybe the F-104 or F-4.
