SNOW in Key West??? In August??? I don't think so!

Must be all that sniff snow sniff. The DEA's new weapon against drugs, mother nature.

I am not smart in the way the sensors are designed but it could be that the precipitation was so heavy/dense that the sensors mistook (is that a word?) the rain for snow.

Yeah, thats what I'm thinking as well, or perhaps there was a lot of sand/dirt/debris in the air that did this as well...

looks like there was no temp given either at eyw, maybe it reverts to the vis to decide what precip is going on? either way, surfs up!

ASOS uses a LEDWI (light emitting diode weather indicator) to determine precipitation type. The sensor is quite unreliable, especially during strong winds. As a backup, ASOS uses the outside temperature as a check (if it is warm outside and LEDWI says it is snowing, ASOS will report rain).

In this case, the temperature sensor failed so ASOS only had the LEDWI to rely upon. Because of the strong wind the LEDWI misread the precip type and reported snow.
