For any XJT pilots, I'm a new hire looking to be based in CLE with a few things I was wondering about. WHen during training do you figure out what base you get? How long are most trips? If you do a trip, can you choose a preference as to where you overnight besides a base, i.e. RDU? Do you ever overnight in CLE so you can be at home (if not commuting from somewhere else)? As a new hire is it hard to get lines that you want? And how is CLE as a new hire if living there? THanks for the help!

Here we go....
1. Figure out the base sometime before IOE -- its different with every class but most generally the first or second week.

2. Trips are 1-4 days in length (it varies).

3. You can bid the trip you want, or as a lineholder you can trade your trip with one in open time if you like it better.

4. Some trips out of EWR and IAH will overnight in CLE, but not many. CLE trips that end in CLE mean you are off work to either domicile rest or days off.

5. As a new hire you are on reserve so there is NO way to get the lines you want.

6. If you want CLE as a new hire, it is going to be yours. THe most senior base for the senior guys, but very rarely does a new hire want to actually go to CLE.

Good luck and look forward to seeing you on the line.

Peace.

I haven't seen one... There may be some when you do the red eye LA flights....

Acutally there are no stand ups anymore. We do some red eye flying out of LAX to Mexico but they are not stand-ups and actually have a 24 hr rest period.

However, some lines have 9:00 hr rest overnights and with delays it will be reduced to 8:00 hrs and that's just about the same as a standup.

That's not to say they are gone forever but I don't see us getting any anytime soon.

Reserve might not be as bad as you think in CLE. A couple guys in my class are holding a hard line after six month just barelys. Upgrade in CLE is another story. That seems like it would be the last base to upgrade in. If you live in CLE or want to live there then reserve is no big deal anyway. Where else can you get paid 75 hours while working about 30 at least that was my case in EWR.
