I didn't say all of the routes would be cancelled. The unique ones (like SVO, IST, ATH, NCE, VCE, BCN) would be shifted over to EWR. These routes would perform better with EWR's better feed and many of them could stay daily even in the winter (something DL can't do right now).

DL's JFK-Europe operation isn't that big. During the summer peak, we're only talking about 15 flights and during the winter it drops down to about 12. So if you shift over the unique routes to EWR, you'd only cut a handful of flights.

If DL's JFK-Europe flights are so profitable, why has DL cut the JFK-Europe operation in half over the last ten years? CO has grown tremendously during that time, while DL has shrunk. Keep in mind, DL cut many of these routes during the booming late 90's which tells me that even in the best of times DL couldn't make money on them.

Have you ever been to EWR? Can anyone expand there? They can hardly sustain what they have now. We would want to create a global airline, not decrease our capacity and allow Jetblue to thrive even more at JFK and others to take over JFK INTL routes. That doesn't help anyone's situation except Jetblue. Also, a CAL merger would send Comair somewhere else---maybe Aeromexico Express. Other people have talked about a possible NW/DL hookup, not just me:

Apr 28, 2005 (JAGfn.com via COMTEX) --Northwest airlines Corp. (NWAC) $5.15 Rumor company will merge with (DAL) $3.45 Should be positive for Delta Airlines.

I guess you know otherwise. Sure, that is old news from a couple weeks ago, but it is out there. I just don't see DL folding their very profitable NYC INTL service and blending it into EWR and adding some cities to make up the difference. So far, there are enough passengers in the NYC area to fill all of the INTL flights from both airports. Why take one away? The Gov't would make them do it. Not likely to enhance a merger. I still think NW is the better partner. JMO.

NW/DL makes alot of sense but neither would have to close anything. For NWall the MSP MEM and DTW are almost at full capacity. LAst month they ran 82% load factors. I can't see any reason to shrink. I however don't know how delta is. As for fleet types that's a problem down the road. I know NW wouldn't give up a DC-9 for anything. they have been here 30 yeasr and will be here another 30

We are full also, thanks to the prevalent low fares. Song is doing great, and our INTL stuff is picking up. A combination of DL and NW would create a global carrier with abundant resources in the Pacific, European, and South American areas. As long as they can lower the costs at both, clean up the pensions with legislation or dropping them, and shedding some debt at DL, it could be a good match. It is all speculation until we hear it from the CEOs.....
