What is your favorite Ernest K. Gann book? I am finally reading every one I can get a hold of, and would like any/all of your comments... Thanks!

Fate is the Hunter is still the best, but Flying Circus is a very close second.

Hostage to Fortune

We do not have the control over our lives we think we do and there is something that intervenes to change the course of our lives that we do not expect. His bio (Gann) "A Hostage to Fortune" show the courses of his life and this intervening force, it is great reding, two other great Gann books I have my libary are "The High and the Mighty", and "Island in the sky" Both of these book come right from his life experiences.

Fate

The only Gann book I've read so far is Fate is the Hunter. I give it five stars.

What was great about the book is he wrote about real people. I looked up Sloniger, whom Gann mentioned several times. Indeed, E.L. Sloniger had quite a history of his own.

Indeed. A few years ago, Sloniger's son published a book about his father. Haven't read it yet, but it's supposed to be very interesting.

Have read a few of his books, and liked them all.

"Fate is the Hunter" is still my favorite after several re-reads.

"The Aviator" is excellent, but much more fictional.

"The High and the Mighty" is a gripping page-turner.

I have noticed that, with the glowing exception of The High and the Mighty, Hollywood has so far been incapable of turning a Gann novel into a decent motion picture. Fate is the Hunter had very little in common with the book. The Aviator wasn't even close.

Blaze of Noon was another very good Gann novel, and I think there's an old black-and-white movie with the same title. Anyone seen it? Any good?

Another vote for "Fate Is The Hunter".

I have Fate is the Hunter, which is the best of the best.

Band of Brothers, a decent fiction novel

In the Company of Eagles, I thought was more real

Gentlemen of Adventure, another decent fiction.

and Flying Circus, excellent!

When I started flying the North Atlantic and then to HNL from OAK, I read the book again, it sure made it come alive. Great book. Fate is the Hunter.

Add my vote for Fate is the Hunter

I was at a used bookstore just east of St Paul at an outlet mall, some 8-10 years ago and picked it up for like 5 bucks.

I can still vividly visualize the Ice Encounter in the DC3 over eastern Tennessee. Gann was a helluva writer.

I still reread it about every 8-12 months.
